RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – Led by sophomore
Thienna Huynh's 2-under 70, the UNLV women's golf team shot an even-par 288 as it jumped to second in the team standings after Wednesday's second round of the Mountain West Championship on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club (Par 72, 6,286 yards).
Huynh, who made three birdies on the front nine and added a fourth on the 18th hole, was one of two Rebels to tally a par-or-better scorecard on the day. Junior
Toa Yokoyama joined her in that group, finishing the round with an even-par 72.
With their scores, Yokoyama (-1) and Huynh (E) each positioned themselves inside the individual top 10 for the tournament in ties for sixth and eighth, respectively. The former improved one spot in the standings and sits four shots off the lead, while the latter surged 14 spots up the leaderboard within five shots of the lead.
Standing behind their Scarlet & Gray teammates on the leaderboard are graduate student
Maria Jose Martinez (+1) in a tie for 12th, as well as juniors
McKenzi Hall (+5) in a tie for 22nd and
Mayumi Umezu (+7) in a tie for 30th.
The Rebels (+1) find themselves within nine shots of day-two leader San Jose State at 8-under for the tournament after also shooting a second-round even-par 288. Making her way atop the individual standings, New Mexico's Lauren Lehigh shot a 3-under 69 to drop to 5-under through 36 holes.
