LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's tennis team saw its season end Wednesday evening with a 4-0 loss to No. 71 New Mexico in the opening day of the Mountain West Championship being staged at the Darling Tennis Center.
The sixth-seeded Rebels closed the season with an overall record of 8-12 while the third-seeded Lobos improved to 14-9 and moved on to Thursday's semifinal round.
UNM quickly built an advantage by taking the doubles point with wins on the top two courts.
In singles, the Rebels came out strong, leading early on four courts.
Anton Ornberg took the opening set from MW Player of the Year Arda Azkara, 6-1, at the top of the lineup but ended up splitting and did not finish.
Taiyo Hirano also won his opening stanza, 7-5, over Alexander Maggs on court five but did not finish because the Lobos won two tiebreakers and another pair of 7-5 sets to get them to the required three singles wins to clinch and end the overall match.
