DALLAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV women's golf defeated Kansas, 3-1-1, in Tuesday's final round of match play to finish seventh at the Texas Showdown co-hosted by SMU and Baylor at Dallas Athletic Club (Par 72, 6,099 yards).
Playing as the No. 6 seed against the fifth-seeded Jayhawks, the Rebels received individual match wins from their junior trio of
Mayumi Umezu,
McKenzi Hall and
Toa Yokoyama and a tie from graduate student
Maria Jose Martinez. Umezu defeated Hanna Hawks by five shots with three holes to play, Hall topped Jordan Rothman by three shots with two holes remaining and Yokoyoma came out on top against Amy DeKock by one.
The win helped the Scarlet & Gray overcome its defeat to No. 7 seed BYU by a 3-2 tally in the first round of match play. In that matchup, Hall and Umezu began their unbeaten day in match play as the former topped Lily McCauley by four shots with three holes left and the latter finished with a four-shot advantage over Lila Galeai with two holes to go.
Winning the team championship, the No. 4 seed Mustangs beat their fellow co-hosts in the top-seeded Bears, 4-1, in the first round and No. 2 seed Maryland, 4-0-1 in the championship match.
UP NEXT: The Rebels now turn their sights to the Mountain West Championships set to take place from April 16-18 at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California.
