LAS VEGAS (UNLVrebels.com) – After a strong performance at the recent Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships last weekend, the UNLV track & field team earned selections to the upcoming NCAA West Regional Championships, as announced on Thursday. The Rebels were invited to bring seven different student-athletes this year, improving on last year's mark of only four.
The Scarlet & Gray will have one field event represented during the meet,
Grace Cunningham qualifying for the high jump. Cunningham qualifies with a season-best mark of 1.80m (5' 10.75") this season, taking the jump at the Desert Heat Classic in late-April of this spring at the University of Arizona. She'll fight for a top spot at the championships, tied for the fourth-best height in the NCAA West Region so far this season according to
tfrrs.org.
The Rebels will have two individuals run the track in solo events, the recent two-time Mountain West Outdoor champion
Kennedi Porter being invited to compete in the women's 100m and 200m events. Already holding strong times heading into the conference championship weekend, Porter bolstered her resume by earning personal-best marks in both of the previously-mentioned events. She holds top marks of 22.98 in the 200m (fifth in the West Region) and a 11.33 time in the 100m (seventh overall).
Jaydea Carter jumps into the list of UNLV qualifiers through her top-20 ranking in the women's 100m hurdles, Carter also picking up a new personal-best time in the event at the recent conference championships last weekend. Not only did the Hollywood, Fla., native pick up her time of 13.45 at the event during finals, but she also notched a personal-best time in the event during the prelims session at the beginning of the championships, which she would beat again later in the previously-mentioned finals time.
UNLV will also bring in a relay to the NCAA West Regional Championships, the team's 4x100m squad earning the invite as one of the fastest program times of all time. With the Rebels' third-best ever time of 44.02, the time being good for sixth-best overall in the region, just .01 seconds outside the top-five. Outside of Porter, the Rebels will bring in
Chinyere Okoro,
Shakeira Bowra,
AnnaKay Maitland and
Sophia Alexander as potential members as their relay squad.
The team will travel out to Fayetteville, Ark., for the West Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Arkansas. The team's first event will take place on Thursday, May 23, kicking off the busy day with
Jaydea Carter in the women's 100m hurdles. As of right now, the time that event is set to kick off is 4:00 p.m. PT.
