LAS VEGAS (UNLVrebels.com) – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced their annual All-Academic Teams and Athletes on Tuesday afternoon, featuring the UNLV track & field team on both lists. Both sets of honors come through head coach
Carmelita Jeter's first season in the 2023-24 academic year, picking up another set of academic accolades in the offseason.
As a team, the Rebels put together a 3.37 cumulative GPA for their NCAA Squad List, eclipsing the 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale requirement by the organization. Through the USTFCCCA's formula, it was verified that the Scarlet & Gray would receive this honor for the first time since the 2021 season.
Individually, the Rebels tabbed three student-athletes as USTFCCCA All-Academic Athletes, marking the first time since the 2020-21 season that UNLV has been featured with multiple student-athletes on the list. Of the student-athletes mentioned are
Grace Cunningham (Psychology),
AnnaKay Maitland (Business Management) and
Chinyere Okoro (Intercollegiate and Professional Sports Management), Cunningham claiming her second major academic award after being named the CSC Academic All-District list earlier this summer.
In order to qualify individually, student-athletes must have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale, as well as completing at least two semesters or three quarters at their nominating institution. They also were required to meet some athletic marks as well in order to qualify for the honor, picking up the mark during either the indoor or outdoor season. During the indoor season, student-athletes needed to finish the season ranked in the top 96 in any event or in the top 48 in any championship relay. During the outdoor season, they must have finished in the top 48 in the East or West Region and have participated in any of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Both season's rankings had to be verified via TFRRS.
