Student-Athlete Graduation Success Rate At 80% Or Higher For Fifth Straight Year

Athletics Department's Federal Graduation Rate again exceeds that of the general student population.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV student-athletes continue to post strong academic numbers as the NCAA released its most recent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) on Wednesday.

This marks the fifth consecutive year for UNLV Athletics with a GSR of 80% or higher. The most recent data released shows the academic success of the student-athletes who enrolled full-time in Fall 2018.

Additionally, the FGR of UNLV student-athletes, both single-year and four-class average, again exceeds that of the general student population at the institution.

"Our student-athletes continue to set a high bar for academic performance at UNLV and serve as a model of consistency and dedication for our entire student body," said UNLV Interim President Chris Heavey. "Balancing the intense commitment of athletics competition and the rigors of academic coursework to earn a college degree is no small feat. I commend our student-athletes for their hard work and determination, and our coaches and support staff for prioritizing their success as both athletes and students!"

Football set a program record for FGR four-class average and also recorded the second-highest GSR in program history at 88% (last year's was 89%).

Women's golf and volleyball each tied their respective program records for GSR at 100%, while men's tennis tied its program record for FGR four-class average, also at 100%.

"We are incredibly proud of our student-athletes, who continue to show that hard work, discipline, and passion lead to success in both competition and in the classroom," UNLV Director of Athletics Erick Harper said. "Upholding high standards is part of the Rebel Tradition, and their academic achievements are truly outstanding. I also want to extend my gratitude to our Academic Leadership team, led by Becky Pugh and David Wedley. I couldn't be prouder of their commitment to the personal growth of our student-athletes."

UNLV student-athletes have achieved a collective grade point average of at least a 3.0 for a record 16 consecutive semesters.

FGR assesses first-time, full-time freshmen in a given group and only counts them as academic successes if they graduate from their institution of initial enrollment within a six-year period. It makes no accommodation for transfers into or out of an institution. It is, however, the only measure that allows a direct comparison between student-athletes and the general student body.

GSR begins with the Federal unit, and adds transfer students, mid-year enrollees, and non-scholarship students (in specified cases) to the sample. Student-athletes who leave an institution while in good academic standing before exhausting athletics eligibility are removed from the unit of their initial institution. This rate provides a more complete and accurate look at actual student-athlete success by taking into account the full variety of participants in Division I athletics and tracking their academic outcomes.
