Lopes Rally Back To Beat Rebels In Five Sets

PHOENIX, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) -  The UNLV volleyball team lost a heartbreaker to Grand Canyon in Mountain West play Saturday afternoon at Global Union Credit Arena. The Rebels (12-12, 6-8 MW) jumped out to a 2-0 lead only to see the Lopes (16-9, 8-6 MW) claw their way back into the contest with third- and fourth-set wins. Moreover, UNLV was one point away from winning the match in the fourth set, but GCU forced a fifth set by claiming a 29-27 fourth set triumph and never looked back en route to capping the 3-2 reverse sweep behind set scores of 19-25, 18-25, 25-19, 29-27, 15-12.

Grand Canyon outhit UNLV .208 to .195 and the Lopes threw down one more kill (62-61) against 25 errors in 178 attack attempts, and .216 in set three, .326 in set four and .438 in set five. The Scarlet & Gray, on the other hand, hit .206 in set one and .174 in set two, although they tallied a .100 clip in the third set and upped its hitting percentage to .282 in set four and .267 in set five. The Lopes, on the other hand, had 61 kills and 35 errors, and hit .100 or worse in four of the five stanzas, but racked up a .351 effort in the third.

Defensively, UNLV held an advantage in blocks (22-18), while GCU recorded five more digs (77-72.) The Rebels had three opportunities to close the match in set four as they were up 24-23, 25-24 and 27-26, but the Lopes clawed their way back and received help on a successful challenge to set the tone for GCU.

UNLV was led by Jaida Harris' double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs along with three blocks (two block assists, one solo block) and one service ace. Alondra Alarcon also notched a double-double of her own with 12 kills and 19 digs to go with three blocks assists and one assist. Basia Latos joined the double-digit kill party with 10 of her own with four digs and three block assists. Brooklynn Williams stepped up and tallied seven kills with five blocks (four block assists, one solo block before she left the match in the fourth set due to a right knee injury. Logan Lindsay recorded a career-high nine kills with two block assists and one dig. 

Rheanna Deen-Jackson tallied five kills, five blocks assists, one assist and one dig. Caleigh King posted a team tying-high 19 digs and now has 928 career digs. Kaia Thiele (23 assists, nine digs, three service aces) and Agata Makowska (20 assists, seven digs, two service aces, one assist) set the tone at the setter position.

UP NEXT: UNLV will now host four straight matches to conclude the regular season, with Wyoming (Nov. 13, 6:30 p.m.) and Colorado State (Nov. 15, 12 p.m.) next week.
