LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV men's swimming senior Daniel Nicusan has been named the Raising Cane's Outstanding Rebel of the Week, the school announced Thursday.
Nicusan has earned the recognition for the second time this season, while the Scarlet & Gray swimming & diving teams win the award for the fourth time this season.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletics Strategic Communications department.
A native of Targu Mures, Romania, Nicusan led the Rebels to their fifth consecutive WAC Championship. At the conference meet, he grabbed four gold medals, six podium finishes and two WAC records.
Among the four wins, Nicusan became the WAC champion in the 100 breast and 200 breast with league records. He added two more titles to his name with school records, winning the 200 IM and contributing as the anchor to the Rebels' 200 medley relay victory.
Additionally, Nicusan grabbed a pair of bronze medals as the anchor of the Scarlet & Gray 400 free relay (2:54.35) and 200 free relay (1:18.19) teams. Closing out the weekend, he tied for the highest point total among swimmers at the meet, contributing 60 points to UNLV's final tally.
