LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - After a strong performance at the recent Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships last weekend, the UNLV track & field team earned selections to the upcoming NCAA West Regional Championships, as announced on Thursday. The Rebels were invited to bring eight different student-athletes this year, improving on last year's mark of seven.
The Scarlet & Gray will have three field events represented during the meet, Krishna Jayasankar qualifying for the shot put and discus, and Grace Cunningham qualifying for the high jump. Jayasankar earned a spot with a season-best mark of 15.87m (52' 1") at the Texas Relays, and her mark sits ninth in the West region. Additionally, Jayasankar's season-best throw of 52.20m (171' 3") in the discus at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships is 15th in the West. Cunningham qualified with a season-best mark of 1.790m (5' 10.5"), taking the jump at the Desert Heat Classic to move up to sixth in the West Region.
The Rebels will have two individuals run the track in solo events, the recent four-time Mountain West Outdoor champion Kennedi Porter being invited to compete in the women's 100m and 200m events. Already holding strong times heading into the conference championship weekend, Porter bolstered her resume by earning personal-best marks in both of the previously-mentioned events. She holds top marks of 11.24 in the 100m (8th in the West Region) and a 22.95 time in the 200m (9th overall).
Jaydea Carter jumps into the list of UNLV qualifiers through her top-15 ranking in the women's 100m hurdles, Carter also picking up a new personal-best time of 13.38 in the event at the UNLV Rebel ELITE.
UNLV will also bring in a relay to the NCAA West Regional Championships, the team's 4x100m squad earning the invite. Outside of Porter and Carter, the Rebels will bring in AnnaKay Maitland, Sadia Green, Jayda Bushay and Gabriella as potential members to their relay squad.
The team will travel out to College Station, Texas for the West Regional Championships, hosted by Texas A&M. The team's first two events will take place on Thursday, May 29, kicking off the busy day with Carter in the women's 100m hurdles and Jayasankar in the shot put at 6:00 p.m. CT.Â
