LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field program travels back to the Golden State this weekend for the Fresno State Invite. The two-day meet runs Friday through Saturday at both Warmerdam Field in Fresno and Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.
Entering the week, the Rebels have five student-athletes ranked in the top 50 of two events in the NCAA. Victoria Perrow is 48th nationally in the 100m (11.32) after her performance at the Jim Bush Legends Meet. The 4x100m Relay team that consists of Perrow, KayVeonna Jackson, AnnaKay Maitland and Mikah Scott ranks 38th with a time of 44.00 seconds at the Jim Bush Legends Meet, which also sits first in the Mountain West.
The Scarlet & Gray will participate in one event Friday, as Amaya Mitchell-Howard will compete in the hammer throw after the men's hammer throw at 1 pm. Saturday's slate consists of nine track and five field events. The action on the track starts with the 4x100m relay (1 pm) and ends with the 4x400m relay (5 pm), while all five field events will take place beginning at 11 am with the long jump and ending with the women's discus after the men's discus at 3:30 pm. In between those will be the shot put (1 pm), and both the high jump and triple jump at 2 pm.
LAST TIME OUT: The UNLV track & field team turned in a strong weekend of competition across two of the West Coast's premier meets, posting a wave of personal-best performances at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California, and delivering multiple top-five finishes at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, April 17-18. At the Bryan Clay Invitational, the Rebels were highlighted by a breakout showing from
Taryn Bailey. Competing in the 800 meters, Bailey clocked a personal-best 2:09.54. She followed that performance with another personal record in the 1500 meters, winning her heat (Heat 7) in 4:43.18. Teammate
Kenley Gowdy also delivered a pair of personal-best efforts. Meanwhile, at the Beach Invitational, UNLV's sprinters and field athletes turned in several standout performances against a competitive field.
Jaci Wright led the way, placing fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 12.11. She also finished fourth again in the 100-meter hurdles while setting a personal best of 13.43.
MOUNTAIN WEST LEADERS: The Rebels have a handful of student-athletes positioned in the top 10 in the Mountain West rankings. Perrow (11.32) and
KayVeonna Jackson (11.65) are first and tied for 10th in the 100m, while Jackson ranks sixth in the 200m (23.59).
Jaci Wright's time of 13.43 in the 100m Hurdles is second overall. Additionally,
Taryn Bailey's 800 meter time of 2:09.54 sits 10th overall.
Roxene Simpson is fourth in the discus throw (52.85m/173' 5"),
Kayli Middleton ranks sixth in the triple jump (12.33m/40' 5.5") and
Amaya Mitchell-Howard ranks seventh in the hammer throw (55.42m/181' 10").
