Final-Round Burst Gives Rebels Fourth-Place Finish In New Mexico

UNLV shoots a 19-under 245 to climb seven spots of the leaderboard Saturday at UNM's William H. Tucker Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) – Behind all four scorers shooting in the 60s, the UNLV men's golf team burst to a final-round 19-under 245 Saturday on the way to a fourth-place finish at New Mexico's William H. Tucker Invitational held at UNM Championship Course (par 72, 7,555 yards).

REBEL FINISH: After entering round three in 11th place, the Rebels climbed seven spots up the leaderboard on the strength of the lowest score of the weekend by any team during the two-day tournament. Leading the charge were 6-under 66 rounds from seniors Ryan Abuan and Zach Little, a 4-under 68 from sophomore Aaron Van Hauwe and a 3-under 69 from senior Mason Snyder.

REBEL ROUNDUP: The Scarlet & Gray lineup's leading duo finished in the top 10, with Abuan coming in seventh at 9-under 207 and Little tying for eighth at 7-under 209. Providing another pair of top-30 efforts, Snyder tied for 26th (-2) and Van Hauwe (-1) tied for 29th as part of four under-par final individual scorecards. Rounding out the Rebel competitors, junior Mason Haley (+3) tied for 54th playing as an individual and junior Avery Lazarski (+4) tied for 59th in the lineup.

SECOND-ROUND HIGHLIGHTS: Upon the resumption of the suspended second round, all six Rebels at the event shot par or better in a 5-under 283 team round. Abuan and Snyder had the round's low at 2-under 70, followed by Haley's and Little's 1-under 71 rounds and even-par 72s from Lazarski and Van Hauwe.

CHAMPIONS: San Diego State came out on top with the team title at 31-under 833. SDSU's Brayden Forte and UNM's Jonnie Clark shared co-medalist honors at 13-under 203 for the tournament.

QUOTABLE: "The boys know how talented they are. They just need to stay patient and not force the issue. They got themselves into a nice rhythm today and fed off each other. That can snowball into low rounds. This will be a round that our team can build confidence on as we start to get into the meat of our season. There is still a lot of work to be done, but Rebel golf is hungry!"
-UNLV Head Coach Andre Gonzales

UP NEXT: The Rebels will now prepare for the Trinity Forest Invitational being held from Oct. 4-5 at Trinity Forest Golf Club.
