Oct. 19, 1999

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - UNLV women's tennis standout Katarina Malec won twice Tuesday to move on to the final round of qualifying at the 1999 Riviera All-American Championships, the second leg of the Collegiate Grand Slam.

To open the day, Malec outlasted 77th-ranked Mira Radu of Mississippi 7-6, 2-6, 6-2. The unranked senior then swept Baylor's top player, 51st-ranked Katja Kovac, 6-1, 6-1.

"Katarina played really well today and demonstrated that she is one of the nation's premier collegiate players," UNLV women's head coach Kevin Cory said. "She is a serious threat to earn All-America status this season."

Malec, who improved to 12-1 on the season, will face 66th-ranked Sarah Walker of UCLA Wednesday.

The only other Lady Rebel entry, Veronica Goude, lost both of her matches and was eliminated. The senior fell to 70th-ranked Erica Biro of Duke, 6-0, 7-5 and then was defeated in a consolation match later in the day, 6-4, 6-2, by Duke's Primi Siripipat. Eight players will earn a spot in the main draw, which runs Oct. 21-24.
