Erez Downed In Regional Semis

LAS VEGAS - UNLV?s Danny Erez advanced to the semifinals of the of the 1999 ITA Regional Championships Friday before finally being ousted by New Mexico?s Matt Amgwerd. Amgwerd and teammate Nic Dubey were declared co-champions.

Erez enjoyed a shocking run through the tourney, winning two matches in the first day, two more on Satuday and a quarterfinal game against Utah?s David Mercier.

Amgwerd and Dubey are also doubles partners and bumped the BYU tandem of Damien Ward and Gert Vilms in a long, even match, 9-7. They will compete in the finals against Idaho?s Darin Currall and Amod Wakalkar, who knocked off both Rebel pairs in the doubles draw, in a 10:00 a.m. PST match on Sunday. Currall and Wakalkar defeated BYU?s other pair, Nic Lossee and Carlos Lozano, 8-6, to earn a spot in the finals.
