Runnin' Rebels Cruise Past MVSU, 99-73

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- UNLV point guard Mark Dickel recorded his first career triple-double Friday night to lead the Rebels to a 99-73 win over Mississippi Valley State in the season-opener for both teams.

Dickel scored 17 points, pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds and recorded a career-high tying 12 assists. Kaspars Kambala led the Rebels with 21 points, 15 in the first half, and Trevor Diggs added 13 points for the Rebels.

Dewayne Jefferson led Mississippi Valley State with 23 points, Johnny Dotson added 15 points and Marcus Metcalf scored 10.

The Rebels led by 14 at the half, but didn't score a field goal in the first four minutes of the second half as the Delta Devils pulled back within nine at 53-44.

Dickel, who had only 3 points at the half, hit the first field goal for the Rebels with 16 minutes remaining to put UNLV back up by 11.

After a Metcalf 3-pointer brought Mississippi Valley State back within eight, the Rebels went on a 10-2 run to extend the lead to 65-49. Dickel scored eight points in the run, hitting a 3-pointer, converting a 3-point play and adding two more free throws.

UNLV eventually extended the lead to as many as 25 points with less than five minutes remaining.
