The UNLV women's basketball team will travel to Nassau, Bahamas to compete in the Nassau Sun Splash Shootout along with Cal State Sacramento, #15 Duke and Liberty. The shootout will be held Monday, Dec. 20 and Tuesday, Dec. 21 with two games each day. Duke will face Cal State Sacramento at 4:00 p.m. PST on Monday, followed by UNLV vs. Liberty at 6:00 p.m. PST. On Tuesday, the losers from Monday will face each other at 4:00 p.m. PST in the consolation game, while the winners will play for the championship at 6:00 p.m. PST. The games will be held at Kendall G.L. Isaacs National Gymnasium in Nassau and all Lady Rebel contests may be heard live on KENO 1460 AM in Las Vegas with Bob Blum delivering the play-by-play and Andy Grossman providing the color commentary. All UNLV Lady Rebel broadcasts may also be heard live on the internet by logging onto www.unlvrebels.com.
Lady Rebels On The Air
The 1999-2000 season marks UNLV's first on KENO 1460 AM. Every Lady Rebel contest including exhibitions and any postseason action may be heard on the Las Vegas sports radio station. All broadcasts may also be heard live on the internet by logging onto www.unlvrebels.com. Bob Blum, the dean of West Coast broadcasters, is in his 12th season as voice of the Lady Rebels and will deliver the play-by-play. The color commentary will be provided at home by Susan Pitz, while Lady Rebel Sports Information Director Andy Grossman will perform the duties during the away contests. UNLV Head Coach Regina Miller's Radio Show may be heard prior to the tipoff of every Lady Rebel game this season. Blum will host the five minute pregame show.
The Lady Rebels
UNLV (4-3) returns five players and two starters from last year's team, which became the most improved Division I team in the nation from 1997-98 to 1998-99... Head Coach Regina Miller is in her second season with the Lady Rebels and has a 21-14 mark... She is in her eighth year as a head coach with an overall record of 81-114... UNLV was on a three-game win streak, until its recent defeat at Nevada, Reno... UNLV lost its first game of the season at UCSB 77-56 in the first round of the Preseason Women's NIT and bounced back to defeat Southern Utah 82-68 in its home opener... The Lady Rebels split in the Cox Communications/Lady Rebel Shootout, falling to Weber State 75-72 in overtime and defeating Southeast Missouri State 69-58... During its current road stretch, UNLV defeated Northern Arizona 71-57 in Flagstaff and Denver 74-65 in Denver, but lost to UNR in Reno 83-75 in overtime... UNLV is led in scoring by 1998-99 national Freshman of the Year award winner Linda Fr?hlich... Fr?hlich is averaging 23.0 ppg and also leads the team in rebounding (10.9) and steals (4.0)... She leads the Mountain West Conference in scoring, total rebounding, steals and defensive rebounds... Kinesha Davis and Constance Jinks are the only other Lady Rebels averaging double figures in scoring with 17.8 and 10.4 ppg, respectively... Davis is second in the team in rebounding with 7.6 rpg, while Carlesa Dixon is third with 5.0... Dayna Gambill leads the team and is second in the Mountain West with 5.0 assists per game.
The Opponents
LIBERTY (4-4) is coming off a 69-57 loss to Kentucky and posted wins over Boise State (64-47) and E. Tenn. St. (74-59) prior to that... The Lady Flames are coached by Carey Green, who is in his first year as a head coach... Liberty is led by Sharon Wilkerson, who is averaging 16.9 ppg.
#15 DUKE (8-1) has won seven games in a row, including wins over #9 Penn State and #24 Virginia Tech... Duke's only loss came to #20 Boston College... The Blue Devils are coached by Gail Goestenkors, who is in her eighth year at Duke with a career mark of 156-69... Duke is led by Georgia Schweitzer, who is averaging 17.7 ppg.
CAL STATE SACRAMENTO (2-5) is on a three-game losing streak... The Hornets most recently lost 84-42 at USC... The Hornets are coached by Sue Huffman, who is in her 14th year at the school with a career mark of 154-199... The Hornets are led by Kerri Dunn, who is averaging 8.7 ppg.
Priority Staffing 3-Point Tally
For every three-pointer the Lady Rebels make this season, Priority Staffing will donate 10 dollars to the Rebel Rousers. So far on the season (including exhibitions), UNLV has made 35 three-pointers which totals $350.

This Season's UNLV Honors
UNLV's Linda Fr?hlich has already received some recognition during this young season. Fr?hlich was named to the Cox Communications/Lady Rebel Shootout All-Tournament team after scoring 24 points and pulling down 13 rebounds vs. Weber State and scoring 37 points and pulling down 14 rebounds vs. Southeast Missouri State. Against SEMO, Fr?hlich was three points shy of her career-high scoring total and one rebound shy of her career-high rebounding total.
For Openers...
At UCSB, UNLV lost only its fifth season opener in program history. The Lady Rebels now hold a 21-5 mark in season openers. As for home openers go, UNLV is 21-5. UNLV won its home opener this season vs. Southern Utah.
The Rebels Rank In The MWC
In the Mountain West Conference statistical leaders through games of Dec. 13, UNLV is in the top three in the following categories: Rebounding Offense (1st, 43.6), Offensive Rebounds (1st, 17.14), Defensive Rebounds (2nd, 26.43), Rebounding Margin (2nd, +4.1), Scoring Offense (3rd, 71.3) and 3-Point Field Goal Pct. Defense (3rd, .295). Individually, Linda Fr?hlich is No. 1 in scoring (23.0), rebounding (10.9), steals (4.00) and defensive rebounds (7.14)... She is also 3rd in offensive rebounds (3.71), 7th in blocked shots (0.71) and 9th in free throw pct (.763)... Dayna Gambill is second in assists (5.00) and assist/turnover ratio (1.75), while Erin Johansson is tied for 6th in 3-point field goals made (1.86).
Four Players, One Coach Serving Suspensions
As a result of an institutional NCAA self-report, four UNLV women's basketball student-athletes and one assistant coach have received game suspensions from the athletics department for a secondary violation of a NCAA rule governing extra benefit legislation. Suspensions were imposed for Lady Rebels Kinesha Davis, Linda Fr?hlich, Erin Johansson and Courtney Swanson and assistant coach Staci Schulz. Davis and Swanson missed the games vs. Southern Utah and Weber State. Fr?hlich and Johansson will miss the Lady Rebels' game against Cal State Fullerton on Tues., Dec. 28, and Johansson will sit out the Jan. 4 game against Navy. Schulz missed the Southern Utah contest.
UNLV Playing Eighth Game In Fifth Locale
The Lady Rebels have been traveling quite a bit and it will continue. UNLV's upcoming trip to the Bahamas will mark its fifth game in a different "state." Denver in Colorado was the Lady Rebels' fourth state that they have played in this year. The other states have been California, Nevada and Arizona.
Fr?hlich Was Honored At Halftime Of Men's Game
Lady Rebel Linda Fr?hlich was honored at halftime of the UNLV men's basketball team's game vs. Georgetown on Nov. 28. Fr?hlich was presented with her award for being named the 1998-99 national Freshman of the Year.
UNLV Good When Fr?hlich Scores 30 Or More
UNLV is 5-1 all-time when Linda Fr?hlich scores 30 or more points and is 16-6 when she scores 20 or more points.
Davis Fulfilling Expectations As Impact Player
Kinesha Davis has started this season the way she left off after her freshman year at Western Illinois... Red Hot!... Against UCSB, Davis scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds in 37 minutes... So far this season, she is averaging 17.8 per game... At WIU two years ago, Davis broke the freshman scoring record for both the school and the Mid-Continent Conference averaging 19.4 ppg... She transferred to UNLV following the 1997-98 season and redshirted last year.
Scoring Starts At The Point
UNLV's leading scorers Linda Fr?hlich and Kinesha Davis should be thanking Dayna Gambill for finding them open so far this season. Gambill leads the team in assists with 35 (5.0) per game) and as of Dec. 13 was second in the Mountain West Conference. She is also second in assist/turnover ratio at 1.75.
Other Contributors
UNLV is getting some contributions from some lesser known players this year making it a total team effort... Freshman Constance Jinks is third on the team in scoring with 10.4 ppg, while freshman Carlesa Dixon is third on the team in rebounding with 5.0 rpg.
UNLV's Three-Game Win Streak Snapped
UNLV was riding a three-game win streak before falling at UNR... The last time UNLV won three games in a row was during the 1998-99 season when it won four in a row three different times... UNLV has not won five in a row since the 1993-94 season.
Double Trouble
UNLV has had three players record double-doubles in points and rebounds a combined nine times this season... Linda Fr?hlich has recorded six and they have all been in the last six games (32 points, 10 rebounds vs. SUU, 24, 13 vs. Weber State, 37, 14 vs. SEMO, 27, 10 at NAU, 16, 13 at Denver, 18, 12 at UNR)... Kinesha Davis has two (27, 10 at UCSB, 26, 12 at Denver)... Tiana Sanders has one (18, 10 vs. Weber State).
Fr?hlich Among National Leaders
Linda Fr?hlich is among the national leaders in scoring, rebounding and steals. She is seventh in scoring at 23.0 ppg. The leader, Grace Daley from Tulane, is at 26.4 ppg. Fr?hlich is the leading sophomore scorer in the country. The next sophomore is UAB's Deanna Jackson at 21.8 ppg in 12th. Fr?hlich is tied for 13th in rebounding at 10.9 rpg. The leader, Malveata Johnson from N.C. A&T has 13.7. Fr?hlich is tied for 17th in steals at 4.0 pg. The leader, Marylou Agustin from New Orleans, is at 6.5.
UNLV Team Notes
At UCSB, UNLV struggled with its shooting, only connecting on 29 percent from the field, however one statistic that improved over the exhibition season was the turnovers. In the two exhibition games, UNLV averaged 25 turnovers per contest and at UCSB, the Lady Rebels committed a season-low 16... UNLV shot 53 percent as a team from the field vs. Southern Utah... The Lady Rebels had four players score in double figures vs. Southern Utah... Against SEMO, UNLV only had two players score in double figures... Fr?hlich (37) and Davis (16)... They combined for 77 percent of the team's scoring in the win... At Northern Arizona, UNLV shot 49 percent from the field and had three players score in double figures... They were Fr?hlich (27), Johansson (12) and Davis (11)... At NAU Johansson finally broke out of her three point slump... Prior to the game she had made only 6-of-27 but against NAU she hit 4-of-8... At Denver, UNLV shot a season-high 36 free throws and made a season-high 27, for a percentage of .750... UNLV had three players score in double figures at UNR (Fr?hlich 18, Jinks 16, Gambill 13).
Runnin' Rebels' Brotherson Good, But Not First At UNLV
Current UNLV men's basketball player Danny Brotherson is getting headlines for the Runnin' Rebels, however he is not the first from his family to play basketball at UNLV. His older sister, Lori played for the Lady Rebels from 1988-89.
1998-99 In Review
Regina Miller's first season as head coach of the Lady Rebels was a memorable one. Followin are some of the major team accomplishments: The team became the most improved Division I women's basketball team in the nation. In 1997-98 the Rebels went 4-23, but improved to 17-11 in 1998-99... Their 17-11 mark in 1998-99 was their best record since the 1993-94 campaign when they went 23-7... They qualified for the WAC Tournament for the first time. Under the old WAC format, only six of the eight teams in each division qualified for the tournament... Their 73-67 win over Hawai'i in the first round of the WAC Tournament was their first conference tournament game win since 1994, when they were a member of the Big West Conference... With their 17 wins in 1998-99, they more than quadrupled their win total for the year prior and exceeded their victory total of the previous three seasons combined... Freshman Linda Fr?hlich was selected as the national Freshman of the Year by the Women's Basketball Journal and the United States Basketball Writers Association after leading the WAC in scoring with 23.5 ppg in 1998-99. She also led the nation in scoring among all freshman... Fr?hlich was selected as First-Team All-WAC Mountain Division, WAC Mountain Division Freshman of the Year, to the WAC Mountain Division All-Newcomer Team, and All-WAC Tournament... Fr?hlich was selected as WAC Mountain Division Player of the Week twice... The Lady Rebels recorded a 10-3 home record, which was their best since 1993-94 when they were 15-2 at home... They won the Golden Gopher Classic, which was their first tournament title since they won the UNLV Showboat Shootout in 1993-94. That win also marked the first tournament win on the road since the Houston Lasdy Cougar Classic in 1990-91... They won their conference opener for the first time since 1993-94 and first conference opener on the road since 1992-93.
Fr?hlich All-Everything
Sophomore Linda Fr?hlich has been tabbed a 1999-2000 third-team preseason All-American by the Women's Basketball News Service. Last year she was selected as the national Freshman of the Year by the Women's Basketball Journal as well as the United States Basketball Writers' Association. She was selected first team All-WAC for the Mountain Division, named Freshman of the Year for the WAC's Mountain Division, named to the WAC Mountain Division's all-newcomer team and selected as All-WAC Tournament. She was named UNLV Sportswoman of the Year, selected as WAC Mountain Division's Player of the Week twice (Nov. 30, Jan. 4), named tournament MVP at the Golden Gopher Classic in Minneapolis, Minn., and was named all-tournament at the Four Queens Shootout in Las Vegas. She also led the WAC in scoring with 23.5 ppg, was sixth in the nation in scoring and first among all freshman, led the team in rebounding with 9.2 rpg, which was second in the WAC and tied for 36th in the nation, she led the team in steals and was tied for first in the WAC and 30th in the nation with 2.9 spg and she led the team in field goal percentage at .462 and was seventh in the WAC. In addition, she was second on the team in free throw percentage with .767 and was 12th in the WAC, tied for 10th in the WAC in blocks per game with 0.9 and recorded 12 double-doubles, including one triple-double.
Fr?hlich Voted Mountain West Conference's Top Returner
Sophomore Linda Fr?hlich led the way on the Mountain West Conference's preseason all-conference team as she was voted both the coaches and media's choice as top returning player in the conference. Also named to both squads were Utah's Lori Red, Colorado State's Heather Haanen and BYU's Cady Williams. Rounding out the coaches' five-member team was New Mexico's Miranda Sanchez. The media chose BYU's Jill Adams.
Head Coach Regina Miller
Regina Miller is in her second season as head coach of the Lady Rebel basketball program. In her first season, Miller led a team that had gone 4-23 the year prior to a 17-11 mark making the squad the most improved in all of Division I women's basketball from 1997-98 to 1998-99. She also led the team to its first-ever WAC Tournament berth and the team's first conference tournament victory since 1994. Miller came to UNLV from Western Illinois where she was the head coach of the Westerwinds six seasons. While at WIU, she led the Westerwinds to the 1995 regular season and post-season conference championships, and the NCAA Tournament. She was also honored as the 1995 Illinois Basketball Coaches Association's Coach of the Year. Prior to earning the post at WIU, where she compiled a record of 60-100, Miller spent five years an assistant coach at her alma mater and national power Old Dominion from 1987-92. ODU reached the NCAA Tournament four of the five years she was there. She landed her first assistant coaching position at Arizona (1986-87) and spent two years (1985-86) as a graduate assistant at Western Kentucky as it made the Final Four both years she was there. At UNLV her record is 21-14, while her career head coaching record is 81-114.
Assistant Coaches
UNLV's assistant coaches are Kristen Cole, Brenda Pantoja and Staci Schulz, while the director of basketball operations is Ayanna Hines. Cole, who is in her first year, came to UNLV from Auburn where she served as an assistant coach since the summer of 1996. Cole graduated from Notre Dame in 1994 where she played basketball. Pantoja, who is in her first year, came to UNLV from Long Beach State where she was an assistant coach since 1997. Pantoja graduated from Arizona in 1996 where she played basketball. Staci Schulz, who is in her second year, came to UNLV from Western Illinois where she was an assistant coach for one season. Schulz was a player at Mount Marty College in Yankton, S.D., where she graduated from in 1996. Hines, who is in her frist year, came to UNLV from the WBCA where she was an events manager. Hines graduated from Howard in 1994.
Lady Rebels Will Play First Full Season In The Mack This Year
This season marks the first full season that the Lady Rebels will play at the Thomas & Mack Center. In the past, UNLV played most of its home games at Lied Gymnasium, however over the years the Lady Rebels have played in the big building. The Lady Rebels have hosted 96 regular season games at the T&M over 17 years and has a mark of 74-23 (.763) in those games.

The inaugural Mountain West Conference Basketball Championship will be held at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev. All eight MWC institutions will compete in the single-elimination event for the first league title March 9-11. Tickets for the event are available through each school's ticket office.
