COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV sophomore forward Linda Frohlich is this week's Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week after earning all-tournament honors and helping her team claim the consolation championship at the Bahamas Sunsplash Shootout. The Rebels suffered a last minute 75-71 loss to Liberty in the opening round, then recovered to post a 78-64 win over Sacramento State in the consolation game.
Against Liberty, Frohlich led all scorers with 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. She sank the second of her two three-pointers with just 18 seconds remaining to cut the Liberty lead to 73-71, but the Rebels could not get any closer. Frohlich also collected three assists, a block and a steal in the game.
In the consolation game against Sacramento State, Frohlich again led all scorers with 23 points, but made an even greater impact on the boards where she gathered a career-high 18 rebounds. In addition, Frohlich provided five assists, two blocks and two steals in the game and only committed one turnover in 40 minutes on the court.
Her totals for the week were 39 points, 28 rebounds, eight assists, three steals and three blocks for averages of 19.5 points and 14.0 rebounds per game in the two contests. She shot .842 (16-of-19) from the free throw line, .357 (15-of-42) from the field and added a trio of three-pointers during the week. Frohlich has notched a double-double in each of the last eight games. She leads the conference and ranks among the nation's best in scoring (23.3), rebounding (11.6) and steals (3.44).
Although the selection is the first for Frohlich this season and also the first for UNLV, it is the third time in her collegiate career that Frohlich has claimed conference player of the week honors. A native of Oldendorf, Germany, Frohlich earned the Western Athletic Conference Mountain Division Player of the Week twice (Nov. 30 and Jan. 4) last season en route to earning the league's Freshman of the Year award.
