Froehlich Honored By WAC

LAS VEGAS - UNLV freshman Linda Froehlich, the Western Athletic Conference's leading scorer, has received three awards from the WAC as the conference's women's basketball honors were handed out Friday.

Froehlich, a 6-2 forward from Oldendorf, Germany (Vincent Lubeck Gym. School) has been selected as the WAC Mountain Division's Freshman of the Year, named Mountain Division First-Team All-WAC and selected to the Mountain Division's All-Newcomer Team. Froehlich is the first Lady Rebel to ever be named to any WAC honors team.

The awards, which were voted on by the WAC's head coaches, were for first and second-team All-WAC, Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Freshman of the Year, All-Defensive Team and All-Newcomer Team for both the Mountain and Pacific Divisions.

In addition to leading the conference in scoring, Froehlich is tied for first in steals (3.0 spg), ranks second in rebounding (9.2 rpg), seventh in field goal percentage (.453), 12th in free throw percentage (.752) and is 16th in blocks (0.8 bpg).

Colorado State, which won the Mountain Division, placed two players on the first team along with SMU. UNLV, which finished in fifth place, placed one. Second team honors went to two players from TCU, and one from Colorado State, Rice and Wyoming.

Colorado State's Becky Hammon was named the Mountain Division Player of the Year, while her coach, Tom Collen, received Coach of the Year honors for the Mountain Division.

UNLV will host Wyoming on Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Lied Gymnasium at 7:35 p.m. in its final regular season contest of the year, then will meet Hawai'i in the WAC Tournament's first round, Monday, March 1, at the Thomas & Mack Center at 8:30 p.m.
