Froehlich Named National Freshman of the Year

LAS VEGAS - UNLV freshman forward Linda Froehlich has been named the National Freshman of the Year by the Women's Basketball Journal, the magazine announced Wednesday.

Froehlich, who led the Western Athletic Conference in scoring average this season with 23.5 ppg, also was selected to the Freshman All-America Team.

This award is the most recent in a long list of accolades for Froehlich, who led the Lady Rebels to a 17-11 mark this season, which was their best record in the last five years. Her other honors this season include WAC Mountain Division Freshman of the Year, Mountain Division First-Team All-WAC, WAC Mountain Division All-Newcomer Team, WAC All-Tournament Team and two-time WAC Mountain Division Player of the Week.

Froehlich ranked first in the nation in freshman scoring and sixth among all players. She finished first in the WAC in steals with 2.9 spg and second in rebounding with 9.2 rpg.

In addition to Froehlich, other members of the Freshman All-America Team are Niesha Butler of Georgia Tech, LaNeishea Caufield of Oklahoma, Jennifer Fambrough of Mississippi State, Deanna Jackson of Alabama-Birmingham, Brandi McCain of Florida, Susan Moran of St. Joseph's, Jesse Stomski of Wisconsin, Detrina White of Louisiana State, Shaquala Williams of Oregon, Tamika Williams of Connecticut, and Lindsey Yamasaki of Stanford.

The other major awards that were handed out by the WBJ were Player of the Year to Chamique Holdsclaw of Tennessee, Defensive Player of the Year to Semeka Randall of Tennessee, and Coach of the Year to Tom Collen of Colorado State.

The WBJ honorees were selected by editors of the magazine prior to the start of the NCAA Tournament.
