KANEOHE, Hawaii - All five Rebel golfers shot under par to help UNLV card a season-low 14-under 274 Friday and repeat as champions of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,552-yard Kaneohe Klipper Course.
The fourth-ranked Rebels (282-276-274-832) entered the day six shots back of Oklahoma State but fired the low round of the day among the 20-team field and finished five strokes better than the second-place Cowboys (272-280-285-837). Brigham Young (279-280-280-839) came in third, Southern Methodist (284-274-283-841) was fourth and Oklahoma (282-284-286-852) tied Fresno State (282-283-287-852) for fifth place.
Junior-college transfer Michael Kirk (68-66-69-203) never left the 60s en route to winning his first tournament as a Rebel and becoming the third UNLV individual medalist this season.
"It was big day for the Rebels," Knight said. "We were playing with the team we were trying to catch and it was nice to see us fight from behind and turn in the day's low round. That's a mark of a good team. This was a nice way to finish up our two weeks on the islands."
Knight's squad was able to throw out a one-under 71 because of an amazing round turned in by Adam Scott, who almost did not play at all. The freshman, who injured his knee stepping in a hole on the course during last week's tournament in Waikoloa, was under doctor's care and wore a knee brace throughout the week.
Scott, who struggled the first two rounds this week and entered the day in 93rd place, shot what tied as the fourth-best round in Rebel history. His seven-under 65 was just one off the school record held by three former All-Americans and landed him into a tie for 46th.
"Adam stepped it up, ignored his knee and really lit it up today," Knight said. "He finished with an eagle, which is all you can ask for."
Charles Howell of OSU and Nicholas Loar of SMU, who were two shots back of Kirk, tied for second while Edward Loar of OSU took fourth and Jan Are Larsen of Alabama was fifth.
Also for UNLV, Jeremy Anderson (72-66-70-203) shot two-under on the final-day to finish in a tie for sixth place while Charley Hoffman (68-72-70-210) tied for 11th and Scott Lander (74-72-71-217) tied for 40th.
Kirk's total of 203 tied for the third-lowest individual score in UNLV history while the team's 32-under par was its best output in a 54-hole tournament since winning last year's John A. Burns at 35 under.
