DALLAS, Texas - Junior Karlin Kennedy and sophomore Anika Calvert each scored a team-high 20 points and one other Mustang scored in double-figures as SMU defeated UNLV 74-62 in a Western Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday at Moody Coliseum.
UNLV took an early 9-3 lead as SMU didn't score a field goal until the 15:16 mark of the first half. UNLV increased its lead to 16-10 with 7:58 left in the half, however SMU caught fire from there. The Mustangs went on a 27-4 run to close the half and took a 37-20 lead into the break.
UNLV cut SMU's lead to 12 points at 44-32 with 13:52 remaining in the contest, but SMU led by as many as 21 points after that and held a 70-50 advantage with under two minutes to play. The Lady Rebels closed out the game with a 12-4 run.
SMU (14-10, 9-3 WAC) was assisted in the win by senior Claudia Brassard's 13 points.
UNLV (15-9, 6-6 WAC), was led by freshman Linda Froehlich's game-highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds. The double-double marks her ninth of the season. Senior Karen Webster added 10 points for the Lady Rebels, including 2-of-3 three pointers.
UNLV's next action will be at home on Thursday, Feb. 25, vs. No. 4 Colorado State at the Thomas & Mack Center at 7:35 p.m. PST. The Lady Rebels will then meet Wyoming on Saturday, Feb. 27, in their final regular season contest and senior night, at the Lied Gymnasium at 7:35 p.m. PST.
UNLV, which has qualified for the WAC tournament for the first time in program history, will begin play on Monday, March 1 at the Thomas & Mack Center. Seedings and game times will be announced on Sunday, Feb. 28.
