CHASKA, Minn. - The UNLV golf team shot a final-round 8-over-par 296 to finish in sixth place after the final round of play at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, which was held at Hazeltine National Golf Club (par 72, 7,196 yards) Saturday.
Georgia (292-305-290-293-1180) fired a final-round 5-over 293 to capture its first NCAA crown at 28-over. Georgia's Ryuji Imada led the Bulldogs' final-round surge as he shot 5-under par on the day.
The Rebels (295-298-306-296-1195) finished at 43-over in sixth place, 15 shots back.
"It's really tough to deal with," UNLV Head Coach Dwaine Knight, who led the Rebel golf team to its first-ever NCAA title in 1998, said when asked about his team's performance at the tournament. "The top four individuals in the nation weren't here for the final 36 holes, which shows you how difficult this course was. Also, one of the top teams in the nation, Georgia Tech, didn't make the cut.
"On this course, if you aren't 100 percent, you will have trouble - and we weren't 100 percent. The one thing we weren't able to do here is stay away from the big-number round. That third round really hurt us."
Oklahoma State (289-308-285-301-1183), who led Georgia by five shots entering the final round, finished second at 31-over, three shots back. Northwestern (296-299-297-296-1188) finished third at 36-over, Washington (307-301-291-290-1189) finished fourth at 37-over, while Arizona State (297-307-296-292-1192) rounded out the top five at 40-over.
Luke Donald (73-68-72-71-284) of Northwestern held on to capture the individual title at 4-under. Imada (72-76-72-67-287) finished tied for second at 1-under along with Washington's Troy Kelly (75-71-70-71-287)
UNLV's top finisher was Adam Scott (77-70-77-73-297), who finished 11th at nine-over. Jeremy Anderson (71-85-74-69-299) shot a final-round 3-under 69 and finished tied for 16th at 11-over.
"I played a good, solid round today," Anderson said. "Actually, the last 27 holes of the tournament I was 5-under. On a course like this with the weather conditions that we had, I am pretty proud of myself. I think the difference between the start of the tournament and the end for me was keeping the ball in play. Today I gave myself some good chances."
"Jeremy had a great round today," Knight said. "It was tremendous and was something that we really needed. We can take a lot away from this including another top-10 national finish for us, which when you step back and look at it is really something. I am really pleased with my team's character. To have them go out and play hard and have a lot of pride like they did today is Rebel golf. We came in here with five wins, which was the most in the country, and had a chance to win with two rounds to go."
Other Rebels competing were Charley Hoffman (71-73-79-81-304/T47th), Michael Kirk (76-78-76-76-306/T57th) and Chris Berry (80-77-79-78-314/T71st.
