ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The top-ranked UNLV golf team shot a second-round 19-under-par 269 to take a five shot lead after two rounds at the 30-team 1998 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships at the University of New Mexico's Championship Golf Course (par 72, 2,748 yards) Thursday.
UNLV, which is 23-under par after two rounds of play, set the mark for the lowest two-round total in the history of the NCAA Championships. The previous mark was 11-under par, which Stanford set in 1994 at Stonebridge Country Club in McKinney, Texas.
"We got off to a good start today and everybody was playing well," UNLV Head Coach Dwaine Knight said. "We threw out our low score of 70 today, which shows just how important our depth is in our success. We have to take the rest of this tournament day-by-day, hole-by-hole and round-by-round. We just need to keep doing what we have been doing this whole season and hopefully we will have a chance to win at the end. That's how we have won six tournaments this year."
Georgia Tech is in second place at 18-under 558, five shots behind the Rebels. Clemson is in third, eight shots back at 561. UCLA and Oklahoma State are both tied for fourth at 12-under-par 564.
The Rebels, who are in first place at the end of an NCAA Championships round for the first time in their history, were led by Bill Lunde's career-low-tying seven-under 65.
Lunde, who is in a tie for 10th place at six-under-par 138, set a new UNLV mark for the lowest-ever individual round at the NCAA Finals. The previous low was Warren Schutte's 67 during the final round of the Championships in 1991.
"I feel great," said Lunde, who shot six-under-par 30 on the front nine. "I had played well coming into this tournament, but yesterday I pressed too much and forced things. Today I was much more patient and was fortunate to get some putts to fall early."
Three other Rebels shot under 70 for the round including Charley Hoffman's career-low 67. UNLV's second-round score of 269 is its lowest round at the NCAA Finals ever. The previous low round was in 1992 in Albuquerque, when the Rebels shot 279.
Chris Berry, who shot a second-round four-under-par 68, and Hoffman are also tied for 10th.
"We haven't had our scores that low recently," Berry said. "We have been talking about a round like this for a while and it finally happened. I think it helped looking up at the scoreboard and seeing how low the team was. It kind of fired me up."
Jeremy Anderson is in a tie for13th at five-under 139 after shooting a second-round 69. Lander shot a second-round 60 and is in a tie for 48th at one-under 143.
TCU's J.J. Henry shot a 67 for the second consecutive day and leads the tournament at 10-under 134. Defending champion Charles Warren of Clemson and Kyle Voska of Miami of Ohio are both tied for second at nine-under 135.
The top 15 teams and top nine individuals from non-qualifying teams made the 36-hole cut and will participate in the tournament's third and final rounds. Max Harris of North Carolina won a playoff for the final individual spot.
The tournament continues Friday and concludes Saturday with 18 holes each day.
