LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The UNLV women's soccer team will begin its inaugural season of intercollegiate play, on the road, September 1 when it takes on Pepperdine. The Rebels wrap up their first road trip at Air Force (September 4) and the University of Denver (September 6).
Staci Hendershott is beginning her first season as a head coach of a collegiate soccer program. A graduate of Michigan State University, Hendershott spent the last five years as an assistant coach with the Spartans under Tom Saxton. Another Michigan State graduate, Damon Rensing will be the assistant coach.
The Rebels' first home contest takes on greater importance when the Michigan State Spartans come to town on September 13. Other home games include Boise State, Idaho State, Sacramento State and conference contests against Wyoming and Fresno State. The Rebels' final home game is October 11 against San Jose State. All Rebel home games will be held at Peter Johann Memorial Field on campus.
The Rebels will be competing in the Pacific Division of the Western Athletic Conference with San Diego State, Fresno State, San Jose State, Utah, BYU and Hawaii. The Rebels close out the regular season on the road, with the season finale coming October 30 at Minnesota.
With two seniors and four juniors, Hendershott's squad is going to be young. What the Rebels will lack in veteran players, they more than make up for in depth. The squad also has plenty of local talent. Nine members come from Las Vegas area high schools. Hendershott is going to have a deep talent pool to dip into during the season with 10 freshmen and three sophomores.
