UNLV Volleyball Defeats Wyoming and Earns WAC Tournament Bye

LAS VEGAS - Led by junior Danielle Gerlach's double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs, the UNLV volleyball team defeated Wyoming 15-13, 15-0, 15-6 in a Western Athletic Conference match and both team's regular season finale Saturday at Lied Gymnasium.

With the win UNLV (22-7, 11-3 WAC) finished the regular season in second place in the WAC's Mountain Division and will receive a first-round bye in next week's WAC Tournament. UNLV finished one match back of Colorado State in the standings.

Gerlach had only three errors in 20 attempts for a hitting percentage of .400 as the Rebels reeled off 22 unanswered points at one point during the match. Junior Angie Sylvas recorded a match-high 13 kills and junior Christel Eves recorded nine kills with only one error in 15 attempts for a .533 percentage.

Meri-de Boyer, UNLV's lone senior, recorded a match-high 37 assists on senior night.

UNLV won the second game 15-0, which marks only the third time in program history that the Rebels have won a game without allowing a point. During that game the Rebels hit .769 with 10 kills and no errors in 13 attempts.

Wyoming (15-13, 10-4 WAC) was led by sophomore Melody Friehauf's seven kills.

UNLV, which defeated Wyoming for the first time in its six all-time meetings with the Cowgirls, won for the 11th-straight time at Lied Gymnasium and finished the regular season with a home record of 13-1.

UNLV out-hit the Cowgirls .317 to .049 for the match and recorded 52 kills to UW's 23. The Rebels out-dug UW 49-28 and recorded 46 assists to the the Cowgirls' 22.

UNLV's 22 wins this season represents a 13-match improvement in the win column from 1997, as the Rebels finished 9-18, failing to make the WAC Tournament. UNLV, which will play in its second WAC Tournament next week, will begin play on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The Rebels will face the winner of the first-round match between the Pacific Division's third seed and the Mountain Division's sixth seed. Official pairings will be released by the conference office on Sunday.
