The UNLV womens basketball team will close out its regular season this week as it hosts No. 4 Colorado State and Wyoming. UNLV will battle the Rams of CSU on Thursday, Feb. 25 at the Thomas & Mack Center (18,500), then travel across the street for a Saturday, Feb. 27 matchup against the Cowgirls of Wyoming at Lied Gymnasium (1,500). Both games will begin at 7:35 p.m. PST and may be heard live on KSFN AM 1140 in Las Vegas with Bob Blum calling the action.

Lady Rebels on the Air
UNLV is in its second season on KSFN AM 1140. Every Lady Rebel contest including any and all postseason play may be heard on the Las Vegas sports radio station. Bob Blum, the dean of West Coast broadcasters, is in his 11th season as voice of the Lady Rebels. UNLV Head Coach Regina Millers Radio Show may be heard prior to the tipoff of every Lady Rebel game this season. Blum will host the five minute pregame show on KSFN AM 1140.

The Lady Rebels
UNLV (15-9, 6-6 WAC) has exceeded its victory total from the last three seasons combined (12) as it has recorded a 15-9 mark in 1998-99...UNLV won only four games in each of the 1997-98, 1996-97 and 1995-96 seasons...The Lady Rebels were 4-23 last year, recording a 3-11 conference mark to finish seventh in the WACs Mountain Division. Even if UNLV drops the remainder of its games, it has clinched its best season since the 1993-94 squad finished 23-7...The Lady Rebels have dropped their last two games, both on the road, to TCU (64-63, ot) and SMU (74-62...Prior to this last weekend, UNLV was on a four-game winning streak, their third such streak of the season...UNLV currently sits all alone in fifth place in the WACs Mountain Division and has clinched its first WAC tournament berth in program history...6-2 freshman guard/forward Linda Froehlich leads the Rebels in scoring with 23.0 ppg (1st in the nation for freshman, sixth in the nation overall, 1st in the WAC), rebounding with 9.1 rpg (2nd in the WAC), and steals with 3.1 (2nd in the WAC)...5-6 senior guard Kristen Pool is the only other Lady Rebel averaging double figures in scoring with 10.4 ppg...She is also averaging a team-high 6.7 assists per game (1st in the WAC)...Led by new coach Regina Miller, the Lady Rebels returned eight letterwinners from a year ago including seven seniors...UNLV has eight newcomers on the squad including three walk-ons and a transfer that will not be eligible until the 1999-2000 season.

The Opponents
NO. 4 COLORADO STATE (27-1, 12-0 WAC) is currently all alone in first place in the WACs Mountin Division...The Rams defeated Wyoming at home last week 101-68 and won their 15th straight game...Colorado State is the WACs highest-ever ranked womens basketball team...CSU is led by senior Becky Hammon who is second in the WAC in scoring with 21.6 ppg...She also leads the team in assists per game and is tied for fifth in the WAC with 4.8...Hammon is also tied for fifth in the WAC in steals per game with 2.6...Senior Katie Cronin leads the team in rebounding and is tied for eighth in the WAC with 7.4 rpg...Cronin is also CSUs second-leading scorer and is fourth in the WAC with 15.6 ppg...Head Coach Tom Collen is in his second year at CSU with a career head coaching record of 51-7.

WYOMING (6-18, 2-10 WAC) is currently all alone in seventh place in the WACs Mountain Division...The Cowgirls have lost their last six contests including last week at then-No. 4 Colorado State 101-68...Overall, Wyoming has lost 10 of its last 11 contests...Wyoming is led by freshman Carrie Bacon who is averaging 14.3 ppg...Senior Jenny Lazzeri leads the team in rebounding with 6.7 rpg, while freshman Molly Marso leads the team in assists per game with 3.4...Head Coach Cindy Fisher is in her first year at Wyoming with a career head coaching record of 6-18.

Head Coach Regina Miller
Regina Miller is in her first season as head coach of the Lady Rebel basketball program. Miller came to UNLV from Western Illinois where she was the head coach of the Westerwinds for the past six seasons. While at WIU, she led the Westerwinds to the 1995 regular season and post-season conference championships, and the NCAA Tournament. She was also honored as the 1995 Illinois Basketball Coaches Associations Coach of the Year. Prior to earning the post at WIU, where she compiled a record of 60-100, Miller spent five years an assistant coach at her alma mater and national power Old Dominion from 1987-92. ODU reached the NCAA Tournament four of the five years she was there. She landed her first assistant coaching position at Arizona (1986-87) and spent two years (1985-86) as a graduate assistant at Western Kentucky as it made the Final Four both years she was there. At UNLV her record is 15-9, while her career head coaching record is 75-109.

Assistant Coaches
UNLV's assistant coaches are Staci Schulz and Carrie Daniels. Schulz came to UNLV from Western Illinois where she was an assistant coach for one season. Schulz was a player at Mount Marty College in Yankton, S.D., from 1991-96. Daniels has spent the previous two seasons on the Lady Rebels' staff.

UNLV at TCU Recap
FORT WORTH, Texas (2/18) -- Junior Shonda Mack made two free throws with 2.8 seconds left in overtime for TCU as it defeated UNLV 64-63 in a Western Athletic Conference women's basketball game Thursday at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.

Trailing 49-39 with 6:23 to play in regulation, UNLV went on a 13-4 run to cut TCU's advantage to 53-52 with 2:16 left. TCU sophomore Amy Sutton made two free throws with 18 seconds left to put the Horned Frogs up 55-52, but UNLV senior Kristen Pool sank a three-pointer with 5 seconds on the clock to send the game into overtime.

TCU led 33-28 at halftime.

TCU (14-9, 6-5 WAC) was led by Sutton's game-high-tying 21 points. Mack turned in a game-high 14 rebounds, while the Horned Frogs had two others score in double figures.

UNLV at TCU Recap Cont.
UNLV (15-8, 6-5 WAC), which had its third four-game winning streak of the season snapped, was led by freshman Linda Froehlich's game-high-tying 21 points. Senior Angalete Dye added 12 points, while senior Liz Wolfe recorded 11. Pool recorded eight assists.

UNLV at SMU Recap
DALLAS, Texas (2/20) -- Junior Karlin Kennedy and sophomore Anika Calvert each scored a team-high 20 points and one other Mustang scored in double-figures as SMU defeated UNLV 74-62 in a Western Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday at Moody Coliseum.

UNLV took an early 9-3 lead as SMU didn't score a field goal until the 15:16 mark of the first half. UNLV increased its lead to 16-10 with 7:58 left in the half, however SMU caught fire from there. The Mustangs went on a 27-4 run to close the half and took a 37-20 lead into the break.

UNLV cut SMU's lead to 12 points at 44-32 with 13:52 remaining in the contest, but SMU led by as many as 21 points after that and held a 70-50 advantage with under two minutes to play. The Lady Rebels closed out the game with a 12-4 run.

SMU (14-10, 9-3 WAC) was assisted in the win by senior Claudia Brassard's 13 points.

UNLV (15-9, 6-6 WAC), was led by freshman Linda Froehlich's game-highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds. The double-double marks her ninth of the season. Senior Karen Webster added 10 points for the Lady Rebels, including 2-of-3 three pointers.

Next Week
UNLV will be playing in its first-ever WAC tournament next week as it has qualified for a first-round game. UNLV is currently in fifth place in the Mountain Division and if it finishes in that spot will play the Pacific Division's fourth-place squad, currently Hawai'i, on Monday, March 1, at 8:30 p.m. PST at the Thomas & Mack Center. Official pairings will be released by the WAC on Sunday, Feb. 28.

Last Year
The Lady Rebels were 4-23 during the 1997-98 campaign and went 3-11 in the WAC's Mountain Division finishing seventh. UNLV was coached by LaDonna McClain for the first 20 (3-17) games of the season and was coached by Steve Corraro for the final seven (1-6). The team did not qualify for the WAC Tournament.

Lady Rebels in the Mack
UNLV plays most of its home games at Lied Gymnasium, however the Lady Rebels have five scheduled dates in the Thomas & Mack Center this year. The Lady Rebels held their Alumni game at the Mack on Nov. 10 and have played LBSU (12/27), UNR (12/30) and UNO (1/3) in the building as well. The Lady Rebels, who are undefeated in the building this year, will host their fourth regular season game of this year in the Thomas & Mack Center on Thursday vs. No. 4 Colorado State. UNLV has hosted 92 regular season games at the T&M over 16 years and has a mark of 72-21 in those games.

Series History
Colorado State leads the all-time series with UNLV 5-1...CSU won the most recent meeting earlier this year (Jan. 30) in Fort Collins 91-55...The last time CSU visited Las Vegas, CSU won 91-75 last season...CSU has won the last five meetings between the two schools...Wyoming leads the all-time series with UNLV 4-3...UNLV beat Wyoming in Laramie earlier this season (Jan. 28) the last time the two played 83-56...UNLV won 66-50 the last time the Cowgirls visited Las Vegas last season...UNLV has won the last two meetings with Wyoming and lost the last four prior to that.

The Last Time vs. Colorado State
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (1/30) -- Senior Becky Hammon scored 20 of her season-high 36 points in the first half as No. 6 Colorado State defeated UNLV 91-55 in a Western Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday at Moby Arena.

Colorado State held UNLV scoreless through the first 5:21 of the game and raced out to a 14-0 lead. UNLV cut the Rams' advantage to 10 points at 18-8 with 10:57 to play in the first half, but would get no closer.

CSU closed out the first half with a 21-5 run over 5:56 to take a 50-19 halftime lead.

The Rams outscored UNLV by only five points in the second half (41-36) in recording the win.

Colorado State (22-1, 7-0 WAC) won its 10th game in a row and its 16th consecutive home game, which was played in front of a season-high crowd of 5,738.

Hammon converted on 13-of-16 from the field, including 4-of-5 3-pointers, while she led the team in assists with six. Senior Katie Cronin added 16 points for CSU, while sophomore Farah McDill contributed 11. Freshman Angie Gorton led the Rams in rebounds with eight.

UNLV (11-7, 3-4 WAC) was led by freshman Linda Froehlich's 15 points and eight rebounds. Senior Angalete Dye was the only other Lady Rebel in double figures in scoring with 11. Senior Kristen Pool recorded a game-high seven assists.

The Last Time vs. Wyoming LARAMIE, Wyo. (1/28) -- UNLV had four players score in double figures including a game-high 25 points from freshman Linda Froehlich as the Lady Rebels defeated Wyoming 83-56 in a Western Athletic Conference women's basketball game Thursday at Arena-Auditorium.

UNLV opened the game with a big run, exploding to a 20-6 lead with 14:40 left in the first half. Wyoming crawled back into the game, eventually trailing by only five points at 26-21 with 9:22 to play before the break. However, UNLV finished off the half with a 13-0 run over 3:57 to take a 47-27 halftime advantage.

UNLV shot 56.7 percent from the field in the first half, compared to UW's 39.3 percent and committed only six turnovers, compared to the Cowgirls' 12.

The Lady Rebels led by as many as 33 points in the second half en route to the victory. For the game UNLV shot 50.0 percent from the field to UW's 37.0. The Lady Rebels committed a season-low 13 turnovers, while the Cowgirls had 25. UNLV also led in the battle of steals recording 17 to UW's three.

The win marks UNLV's first-ever at Wyoming in four tries. The Lady Rebels (11-6, 3-3 WAC) also recorded their largest margin of victory of the season - 27 - which eclipses the old high of 26 vs. Tennessee-Chattanooga. UNLV's 83 total points also marks a season-high, eclipsing the old mark of 82 at Air Force.

Froehlich also led the Lady Rebels in rebounds with eight, while senior Amy Wunderlich scored 14 points, senior Liz Wolfe had 12 and senior Kristen Pool added 11.

Wyoming (5-12, 1-5 WAC) was led by senior Jenny Lazzeri's 15 points. Senior Rebecca Tomlin scored 14 points, while she grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

UNLV Clinches Best Season Since 1993-94
UNLV's 15-9 season is its best since 1993-94 squad finished 23-7. Even if UNLV the remainder of its games it will still mark the best season for the program in five years.

UNLV Qualifies For WAC Tournament For First Time
UNLV has qualified for the WAC tournament for the first time in program history. UNLV failed to qualify for the tournament its first two years in the conference. The last time UNLV qualified for post-season play was during the 1994-95 season at it lost in the first round of the Big West Tournament to Pacific 58-57.

UNLV Has Exceeded Victory Total of Last Three Seasons Combined
With its 15 wins this year, UNLV has exceeded its win total from each of the last three seasons combined. In 1996-97 and 1997-98, UNLV recorded marks of 4-23 and in 1995-96, UNLV was 4-21. The Lady Rebels are only one win away from quadrupling last year's win total of four.

UNLV Has Been Streaky
UNLV has had three separate four-game winning streaks this season. Its most recent streak was snapped at TCU last week.

Rebels Have a Knack for Coming Back -
UNLV has trailed at the half in 11 of its 24 contests this season and has won five of them...The Lady Rebels have won 10 of the 11 games in which they had the lead at halftime this season.

Lady Rebels Impressive at Home
UNLV is 9-2 at home this year, compared to 5-7 on the road.

UNLV Holds UTC to Lowest Opponent Point Total in Eight Seasons
UNLV held Tennessee-Chattanooga to 42 points for the game...It marks the fewest points allowed by UNLV since the 1990-91 season when it defeated Northern Arizona 82-32.

Lady Rebels Claim Title for First Time in Five Years
With its win at the Golden Gopher Classic, UNLV won its first tournament title since it won the UNLV Showboat Shootout in 1993-94. UNLV also won its first tournament on the road since the Houston Lady Cougar Classic in 1990-91.

Froehlich Selected as WAC Player of the Week Twice This Season
Linda Froehlich became UNLV's first-ever WAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday, Nov. 30, then followed it up with a second award on Jan. 4. Froehlich, a 6-2 freshman guard/forward from Oldendorf, Germany, led UNLV to a 2-0 mark at the Golden Gopher Classic, earning MVP honors. She was selected as the WAC's Mountain Division Player of the Week for the first time after averaging 31.5 points, 10.0 rebounds and shooting .558 from the field in UNLV's wins over Delaware and Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn. Froehlich most recently led UNLV to a 2-0 record with home wins over Nevada, Reno and New Orleans. For the week, she averaged 31.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and shot .609 from the field, which qualified her for the award again.

Johansson Sets Lady Rebel Record for 3-pointers

Freshman Erin Johansson set a school record for most 3-pointers in a game at Air Force with seven...She scored a career-high 21 points, eclipsing the old mark of six three pointers set by Denise Ballenger (1988) and Gwynn Hobbs (1993)...Johansson was one attempt shy of matching the Lady Rebel record for most 3-point attempts in a game, which is 14.

UNLV Wins Conference Opener For First Time Since 1993-94

UNLV's win at Air Force in its conference opner was its first time opening conference play with a win since the 1993-94 season and its first on the road since 1992-93.

Lady Rebel Honors
UNLV had two players named to the Golden Gopher Classic all-tournament team. Linda Froehlich and Kristen Pool received all-tournament honors, while Froehlich was named tournament MVP...Froehlich was also honored at the Four Queens shootout by being selected to the all-tournament team.

Atop the NCAA
The following statistics were as of Feb. 15. Linda Froehlich is the nation's top freshman scorer with 23.0 ppg and is sixth in the nation overall. In fact, Froehlich is the only freshman in the nation ranked in the top 40 in scoring. Froehlich also ranks nationally in steals and is tied for 22nd with 3.1 per game. Kristen Pool is the only other Lady Rebel ranked nationally and is tied for 10th in assists with 6.7 per game.

Leaders of the WAC
UNLV's individuals either lead or are very close to leading the WAC in several categories and are as follows: Linda Froehlich (1st in scoring with 23.0 ppg, 2nd in rebounding with 9.1 rpg, 2nd in steals with 3.1 spg, 7th in field goal percentage with .461); Kristen Pool (1st in assists with 6.7 apg, T-9th in steals with 2.3 spg, 9th in free throw percentage with .807); Angalete Dye (T-2nd in blocks with 1.6 bpg, 6th in rebounding with 7.6 rpg); Erin Johansson (T-8th in three-pointers per game with 1.6, 10th in three-point goal percentage with .358). As a team, UNLV is: 2nd in rebounding with 39.8 rpg, 3rd in steals with 11.3 spg, 4th in rebound margin at +3.1 rpg, 4th in blocks with 3.5 bpg, 5th in opponents' rebounds with 36.6 rpg, 5th in field goal percentage defense with .396, 6th in scoring with 66.3 ppg, 6th in free throw percentage with .702, and 6th in three-point field goal percentage defense at .305.).

There are four Lady Rebels who have recorded double-doubles this season...Linda Froehlich has recorded nine with 17 points and 13 rebounds at LMU, 25 points and 12 rebounds at UTSA, 24 points and 12 rebounds at Minnesota, 22 points and 10 rebounds vs. LBSU, 37 points and 15 rebounds vs. UNO, 16 points and 13 rebounds at Air Force, 32 points and 12 rebounds at Tulsa, 24 points and 11 rebounds vs. Rice, and 25 points and 11 rebounds at SMU...Angalete Dye has recorded five with 10 points and 11 rebounds at UTSA, 11 points and 12 rebounds vs. UTC, 14 points and 10 rebounds at SUU, 11 points and 11 rebounds vs. LBSU, and 10 points and 10 rebounds at Air Force...Liz Wolfe has recorded one with 15 points and 10 rebounds at LMU...Kristen Pool has recorded two with 16 points and 12 assists vs. SMU and 16 points and 10 assists vs. Denver.

Super Superlatives
Linda Froehlich has recorded two of the top three individual point outputs of the season in the WAC so far this year. She scored 39 vs. Delaware on Nov. 28 and 37 vs. New Orleans on Jan. 3. TCU's Amy Sutton also scored 39 at Air Force. Froehlich has also recorded the top three field goal totals in a game, while she has recorded all five of the top field goal attempts totals. She is also tied for the most steals in a game for a WAC player this year with eight vs. Tulsa. Kristen Pool is tied with Rice's Charonda Wilson for the most assists in a game by a WAC player this season with 12. Pool recorded 12 vs. SMU on Jan. 21.

1999 WAC TOURNEY
For the third straight year, the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of UNLV will serve as the site of the WAC Women's and Men's Basketball Tournaments. The women's tournament will be held March 1-6 and will involve 12 of the 16 WAC teams. The top two teams from each division will receive a first-round bye, while the remaining eight teams will play first-round games on March 1. The women's quarterfinals will take place on March 3 with the same game times as the first round. The semifinals are slated for March 5 with the championship game scheduled for March 6.
