Women's Tennis Falls in First Round at WAC

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Ninth-seeded and 75th-ranked UNLV lost to eighth-seeded BYU 5-1 in the first round of the 1999 WAC Women's Tennis Championship at the Tanoan Country Club Wednesday.

The Lady Rebels fell to 6-14 overall and 2-3 in the WAC.

BYU won five of six singles matches. The only Lady Rebel to win was Marianne Bakken, who downed Kim Kelly 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 at the fourth position. Former UNLV player Gee Gee Garvin, who is now BYU's top singles player, defeated Katarina Malec 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot.

Doubles play was cancelled.

UNLV will play Air Force in Thursday's consolation first round. The Falcons fell to top-seeded Fresno Sate 5-1.
