Volleyball Recognized in Preseason Poll

August 16, 1999

LAS VEGAS - For the first time in program history, the UNLV volleyball team will open a season after being mentioned in the USA Today/AVCA preseason national poll.

UNLV, which finished the 1998 season 23-8 and recorded its best-ever win percentage, received one vote in the poll. During 1998, UNLV received votes three separate weeks, but it has never received prior mention in a preseason national poll.

The other Mountain West Conference teams recognized were Brigham Young, which is ranked No. 7 with 1,186 votes, Colorado State, which is ranked No. 24 with 173 votes, and Utah, which received 24 votes.

Topping the preseason poll is Penn State, followed closely by Stanford, Nebraska, Hawai'i and 1998 NCAA champion Long Beach State. Rounding out the top 10 are Pacific, BYU, Florida, Wisconsin and UCLA.

UNLV will begin the 1999 campaign at home on Friday, Sept. 3, as it hosts the Official All-Star Cafe/UNLV Volleyball Classic, which involves Iowa State, UMKC and Southern Illinois.
