LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV volleyball redshirt sophomore outside hitter Jaida Harris has been named Mountain West Newcomer of the Year and named to the 18-member MW All-Conference Team, the conference announced Tuesday. Harris became the second Rebel all-time to receive MW Newcomer of the Year accolade, joining former Rebel setter Jhenna Gabriel who earned the honor in 2022.
Harris, a Las Vegas native and Lake Mead Christian Academy graduate, saw her name in several top MW-only statistical categories, including third in points (297.5), fourth in kills (254), tied for fourth in service aces (22), fifth in points per set (4.25) and tied for fifth in both kills per set (3.63) and service aces per set (0.31). Harris, who was one of two Rebels to start all 18 MW matches, led the Scarlet & Gray in four of those aforementioned figures as well as attack attempts (696). She also amassed four double-doubles in league play.
As of Tuesday, Harris has her name listed in the top 150 of six NCAA statistical categories, such as tied for 101st in the NCAA in total points (439), 113th in points per set (4.18), tied for 134th in total attacks (1,012), tied for 139th in total kills (370), tied for 143rd in service aces (38) and 149th in kills per set (3.52).
For the year, she has 19 double-doubles (all kill-dig combinations). She notched 10 or more kills in 19 matches, and that includes a career- and season-high 27 kills against New Mexico (October 16), where she was subsequently named the MW Offensive Player of the Week. She also tallied 10 or more digs in eight matches with a career- and season-high 16 coming against Boise State (October 23). Additionally, Harris collected a trio of service aces on six different occasions, including a career high four against Santa Clara (September 6). On the defensive side of the net, she had a minimum of 3.0 total blocks on six occasions.
