LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men?s soccer team failed in its quest for a home tournament title when they dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Maryland-Baltimore County Friday night at Johann Field.
The Terriers? Giuliano Celenza recorded the match?s only score at 11:01 after fielding a rebound, moving past two defenders and driving the ball off the left post behind keeper Ryan Bledsoe (Las Vegas, NV/Eldorado). UMBC is now a perfect 5-0-0 on the year.
UNLV missed a couple of chances in the second half and fired nine shots on the evening, but could not beat UMBC?s Tom Wunk, who tallied the shutout.
The Rebels fall to 2-4-0 on the season and look to rebound in a 12:00 noon matchup Sunday against #18 Gonzaga.
Gonzaga 2, San Diego State 0
Gonzaga patiently waited for chances to beat the San Diego State defense to log a 2-0 win in the nightcap of the Coors Soccer Classic at Johann Field.
Under pressure from the Bulldogs, a cross pass was deflected into the goal by an Aztec defender to give Gonzaga a 1-0 lead on an own goal.
Jason Kuska put the match out of reach when he tapped in a perfect pass from Matt Blasdel at 64:20.
Gonzaga, ranked 18th in this week?s Soccer America poll, will play UNLV at 12:00 noon Sunday with UMBC vs. San Diego State to follow.
