DAVIS, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV men's soccer (8-5-3, 4-3-1 MW) suffered a 2-1 road defeat to UC Davis (2-10-4, 2-5-1 MW) at Aggie Soccer Field on Wednesday in its regular season road finale as the squads split the season series.
In search of a second-half comeback, the Rebels received a 76th-minute goal from junior midfielder Joaquin Eisenberg that brought his side within one score of the Aggies. That ultimately wound up falling short of overcoming UC Davis' pair of first-half scores in the ninth minute and the 41st minute.
Eisenberg turned in his second goal of the season as he cleaned up a deflection off the shot from senior forward Nick Legendre, who was credited with his team-leading fifth assist on the year.
STAT OF THE GAME:Â The Scarlet & Gray won every statistical battle during the match except in scoring, finishing with advantages over the Aggies in total shots (17-6), shots on goal (8-2) overall possession and corner kicks (8-1).
As part of the comeback attempt, UNLV's attack launched nine total shot attempts in the second half. The Rebels also nearly earned chances at penalty kick goals on a potential UC Davis handball in the 14th minute and when Eisenberg hit the deck in the box in the 77th minute, but each call ended up being overturned upon VAR review.
In spite of the outcome, the Rebels had more chances that threatened to score during the course of play. Senior forward Bryce Allred dove into a header at the far post on a cross from senior midfielder Kai Merril that took a favorable bounce into the Aggie goalkeeper's gloves in the 38th minute. Sophomore forward Maxim Scordo had the last shot on target, sliding into his shot in traffic inside the 18 in the 81st minute that was also saved.
QUOTABLE:Â "Soccer is a funny game, you can dominate every stat and still lose, and we had to be better in the first half to get the result tonight."
-UNLV Head Coach BJ Craig
UP NEXT:Â The Rebels will return to Las Vegas for back-to-back home matches to close the regular season, starting with a 6 p.m. tilt Sunday vs. Air Force at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
