SAN JOSÉ, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) — The UNLV men's soccer team's (8-4-2, 4-2 MW) comeback from a two-goal deficit was cut short as it fell to San José State (6-6-2, 3-2-1 MW) on Sunday at Spartan Soccer Complex.
Freshman defender Thomas Gulbrandsen scored his first career goal in the 66th minute to bring the Rebels within one score of the Spartans. The Scarlet & Gray backline also shut out SJSU's attack in the second half, but the Spartans' pair of first-half goals proved the difference in the end.
UNLV continued to make a push in the second half, outshooting SJSU 5-2 in the final 45 minutes and creating a pair of near scoring chances. Off a free kick in the 57th minute, the Rebels appeared to score but it was ruled offside. Additionally, sophomore Maxim Scordo made a run into the box in the 86th minute and drew contact, but the review for a potential penalty came to no avail.Â
STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV dominated ball possession in the second half and ended up with a 9-5 total shot advantage for the full 90 minutes. But the Spartans created more opportunities at the net to win the shots on goal tally 5-4.
QUOTABLE: "'We have played four of our first six league games on the road and no other Mountain West team has had to do this, so I'm very proud of the effort today and disappointed for the team as they deserved so much more from the performance. We started very well, dominating most of the half, but we didn't create enough chances to get the early goal we needed and then suddenly we were down two goals heading into halftime with some uncharacteristic moments for us.
"In the second half, we dominated the play again, had a goal called back, then scored again a few minutes later for what should have been the tying goal, and then had a questionable penalty denied for what could have been the go-ahead goal so in the end, I can't fault the players, we just ran out of time today in a game we controlled and deserved to take points from."
