ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The UNLV men's soccer team won its first match of the UNM Invitational on Friday in Albuquerque, 1-0. With the victory, the Rebels improve to 7-5-1 on the season, matching the team's win total from a season ago.
The Rebels and the Falcons played to a 0-0 tie at the end of the first half with not much offensive production to boot. The Falcons played a man down for the last 55 minutes of the match after Noah Mercia-Jones was sent off with a red card in the 35th minute.
The second half began with the Rebels taking full advantage of the Falcon loss. UNLV fired seven shots in the half. At the 62:12 mark senior defender Brent Storrs put a shot past the Falcon keeper for the game winner and Storrs' second goal of his career and first of the season. Senior keeper, Robert Ackah, saved six balls en route to his fourth shutout of the season for the Rebels. This was the Rebels sixth shutout of the season and the third 1-0 shoutout.
UNLV will battle Alabama A&M on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. The Bulldogs defeated New Mexico in the night cap, 2-1. The Rebels will get back into MPSF play next week as they travel to Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine and San Diego State. UNLV will return home November 5 to take on New Mexico at noon.
