BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UNLV golf team (289-295-294--878) shot nine-over par in the final round of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at Old Overton Golf Course on Tuesday to finish in 11th place in the team standings.
Leading the way for UNLV was sophomore standout Calvin Kupeyan (69-74-72--215), who finished the 54-hole tournament at three-over par and tied for 20th overall.
Freshman Travis Whisman (73-71-74--218) cracked the top half of the group at five-over par, finishing 29th overall of 60 competitors. Fellow freshman James Oh (72-72-76--220) followed close behind in 33rd place at seven-over par.
Sophomore Tyler Mays (80-78-72--230) rebounded from a disappointing first day to fire a one-over in the last round and climb to 56th place on the leaderboard at 17-over. Newcomer Justin Lee (75-80-77--232), is his first tournament as a Rebel, was just two strokes behind in 58th place.
Georgia Tech's Bryce Molder, the country's top-ranked individual, maintained his five-stroke lead to capture medallist honors, but could not keep his team in the lead as Clemson overtook the Yellow Jackets to win its fourth straight JPNI crown.
The Rebels return home and have about two weeks of practice before returning to the East to compete in the Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Collegiate Invitational in Hilton Head, S.C. on Nov. 3-5.
