LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's soccer team defeated New Mexico 4-1 in a Mountain West Conference battle on Wednesday at Johann Field. With the victory, the Rebels move to 10-6 on the season and 3-2 in the conference. New Mexico falls to 7-9 on the year and 2-3 in the conference.
The Rebels opened the scoring at the 17:22 mark on an unassisted shot by junior Janae Sims for the 1-0 lead. Sims, tallied her first of two goals on the evening and set a school record for goals in a season with eight and scoring in a season, 18, at that point in the match. The match stayed 1-0 throughout the rest of the first half.
The Rebels scored the second goal of the match just three minutes into the second half. Junior Anita Pedford scored her fifth goal of the season with an assist from Sims on a breakaway crossing pass beating the Lobos' keeper. The Lobos cut into the two goal deficit at the 52:48 mark on a blazing shot by sophomore Michelle Nowfel to make the score 2-1. As momentum began to swing towards the Lobos, the Rebels retaliated with the final two scores of the match. The first one came at 73:12 by Sims from senior goalkeeper Shannon Wilson on a long pass, from Wilson, down field to a streaking Sims. The final goal came just minutes later on a penalty kick by sophomore Cristyn Enea, her third score of the season.
With four goals, the Rebels tie the school record for goals in a match, set September 29, 2000 in a 4-2 victory over Long Beach State. The Rebels also improve to a school record 6-0 at home on the year. Another record that fell tonight was team assists in a season. The previous record was 19, set in 1999. With two dishes against the Lobos, the Rebels surpass that to 21 assists on the year.
The Rebels travel to San Diego State on Sunday for the last conference match of the season, then return home next weekend for the UNLV/FILA Tournament. UNLV plays Western Michigan on October 27 at 7:00 p.m. at Johann Field. The early game features Denver and UTEP with kick-off set for 5:00.
