LAS VEGAS (AP) - Jermaine Lewis made a free throw with 3.1 seconds remaining Saturday night to give UNLV a 70-69 victory over Cal State Northridge.
Following Lewis' foul shot, CS Northridge's Brian Heinle, who had 32 points and 11 rebounds, attempted a 3-point shot that could have won the game, but it hit the rim and bounced away.
Lewis, who scored 14 points, was fouled in the act of shooting by Marco McCain, and made the second free throw after missing the first.
Dalron Johnson led the Rebels (3-2) with 18 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots. Trevor Diggs added 16 points and Kaspars Kambala had 10 points and 12 rebounds for UNLV.
Outside of Heinle, no other player scored more than eight points for Northridge (2-1).
Jeff Parris, who had a career-high 27 in the Matadors' 78-74 upset victory at No. 14 UCLA on Tuesday night, had only seven before fouling out with 2:08 to play.
UNLV led 60-51 with 6 1/2 minutes remaining before the Matadors began chipping away, and McCain made a 3-point shot with eight seconds left to make it 69-all. McCain fouled Lewis five seconds later.
UNLV led 37-30 at halftime after trailing by as many as six points early in the game. The Rebels never trailed after that.
The Matadors made only 2-of-17 shots from beyond the 3-point line while the Rebels were 5-of-15.
