Two UNLV women's track and field athletes posted NCAA provisional qualifying marks in their respective events at two different track meets this weekend.
Senior sprinter Ayanna Hutchinson improved her chances for an invitational to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday, improving her best time in the 60-meter dash with a fifth-place finish at the Cannon IV Classic in Indianapolis, IN. Hutchinson clocked a 7.38 in the finals of the 60 meters.
Already leading the Mountain West Conference in her event, Hutchinson is now the favorite to capture the league title at the inaugural MWC Indoor Championships in Colorado Springs, CO on Feb. 24-26.
Senior shot putter Jessica Marable added her name to the growing list of UNLV provisional qualifiers with her victory in the shot put at the Bill Cosby Invitational in Reno, NV on Saturday.
Marable won the event with a toss of 51-7.75, more than six feet better than her closest competitor. The qualifying mark ensures her of a return trip to the NCAA Championships, where she attained All-America status with her eighth-place finish last year.
In Indianapolis, UNLV had a chance to see some of the nation's elite athletes in a meet that featured more than 1,000 competitors and 75 universities. Sophomore Michele Davis finished fourth in the 400 meters against that competition, tallying a season best 54.92. The conference championships will be her last chance to trim her time to the qualifying mark of 54.70.
Senior distance runner Stephanie Davidson came within nine seconds of becoming the Rebels' fourth NCAA qualifier, registering a 4:58 in the mile and finishing 17th overall.
Also highlighting the Rebels' weekend in Reno was pole vaulter Charlotte McGee, who broke her own school record by clearing a personal best 10-8 and winning the pole vault.
Freshman sprinter Erin Dangerfield posted a pair of fourth-place finishes, going 7.35 in the 55 meters and 25.70 in the 200 meters, while fellow freshman Tianika Sharrieff cleared a career best 5-5.75 in the high jump to finish fifth.
