Feb. 24, 2000COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The UNLV track and field team is in first place after the first day of competition at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships behind the performances of its two pentathletes.
Senior Heather Steadham finished in second place with a personal best score of 3,703. She was just 199 points behind San Diego State's Aja Frary, who won the event with 3,902 points.
Steadham either set or matched her best marks in all five events during Thursday's competition, yet still fell short of the conference title. She was the runner-up in the heptathlon at last year's WAC Outdoor Championships, placing behind Frary in that event, also.
Freshman standout Chantel Yates added almost 300 points to her best pentathlon score, finishing third with 3,610 points. She tallied career bests in four of the five events and posted the second best mark in the shot put among the pentathletes.
With only the pentathlon contested on Thursday, the Rebels hold a slight 13.5-11 lead over San Diego State in second place. BYU follows in third with 7.5 while Utah and Colorado State round out the scorers with four and three points respectively.
The three-day competition will resume at Cadet Field House on Friday and conclude on Saturday.
