CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - UNLV's men's tennis team used a huge upset at No. 1 singles to help defeat league rival New Mexico and salvage a split during the second day of the HEB Tennis Classic being played at the HEB Center Saturday.

The Rebels, ranked 61st, began the morning with a 4-1 loss to No. 41 William & Mary before coming back to defeat the 57th-ranked Lobos 4-2. The win marked the first Mountain West Conference competition for UNLV, which finished the day with an overall record of 4-7.

In the UNM match, UNLV was led by unranked Vladimir Pavicevic, who stunned sixth-ranked Matt Amgwerd in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. The Rebels, who broke a four-match losing streak and picked up their first win this season over a higher-ranked opponent, also got points from Danny Erez, Gregor Skorin and Robbie Parlade to clinch the victory and avoid doubles play.

In the earlier match, William & Mary, which improved to 12-4, began the day by taking two of three doubles matches for one team point. The Tribe then got straight-set wins from Jody Stik at No. 2, Mehdy Karbid at No. 4 and Brian Lubin at No. 5. UNLV's only win came at the No. 6 where Robbie Parlade downed Martin Larsson 1-6, 6-1, 10-7 in a third-set super tiebreaker. The two remaining matches were halted.

UNLV will face No. 21 Minnesota in final-round action Sunday.
