UNLV men's soccer player Ryan Bledsoe was named to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large first team, it was announced Tuesday.
Bledsoe, who posted a 4.00 GPA as a graduate student in economics last semester, was a two-year starter for the Rebels at goalie. He has twice been honored as UNLV's Most outstanding Male Scholar-Athlete and is a two-time member of the Rebel Academic Top 30.
On the field, Bledsoe started 13 games in the net in 1999, recording a 2.17 goals-against average and one shutout. He owns a career GAA of 1.87.
GTE and CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) select Academic All-America teams in football, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball and an at-large team, which represents all other intercollegiate sports. Bledsoe competed against not only other soccer players, but also nominees in cross country, gymnastics, skiing, water polo, fencing, ice hockey, wrestling, rifle and swimming.
He is UNLV's first Acadmic All-America first team selection since Kim Rondina won the award in softball in the spring of 1997.
