Men's Tennis Falls In Semifinals

April 21, 2000

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - UNLV failed to earn a point and lost to New Mexico 4-0 in the semifinals of the inaugural Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championship at the Lobo Tennis Club Friday.

The third-seeded Rebels fell to 8-13 overall and 4-3 vs. MWC teams while the host Lobos improved to 9-12 overall.

Playing doubles to begin the day, the teams split the first two matches as UNLV won at No. 2 with the duo of Vladimir Pavicevic and Danny Erez. The team point, however, came down to the top position where UNM's Matt Amgwerd and Nic Dubey outlasted Nenad Zivkovic and Gregor Skorin in a tiebreaker 9-8.

In singles play, the Lobos quickly won three straight-set matches to clinch the victory. The final score was deceiving, however, as the Rebels had split sets in all three remaining matches, which were halted.

In Saturday's final, UNM will face top-seed San Diego State, which was a 4-1 winner over BYU in the other semifinal. UNLV will take on the Cougars in the third-place match. In their only other meeting this year, the Rebels downed BYU 4-3 on March 31 in Las Vegas.
