Golf Sits Fifth After First Day of NCAA West Regional

MADERA, Calif. - The UNLV golf team sits in fifth place after shooting a five-under par 283 in the first round of the NCAA West Regional Golf Championships at Riverbend Golf Club on Thursday.

The Rebels are seven strokes off the pace, set by BYU who turned in a 12-under 276 for the day. The Cougars also boast the first round individual leader in Manuel Merizalde, who tied with UCLA?s Parker McLachlin with a five-under 67.

Freshman Calvin Kupeyan is the Rebels? surprise leader, tied for third overall at four-under, one stroke off the lead. One stroke behind him is senior Jeremy Anderson at three-under, and senior Michael Kirk finished the day two-under par.

Rounding out the Rebel lineup are Scott Lander and Robert Sul, who both turned in rounds of four-over par and stand tied for 93rd overall.

The final two rounds of the tournament will be played on Friday and Saturday, and at least the top eight teams by finish will advance to the NCAA Championships in Opelika, Ala. from May 31-June 3.
