Storyline: The UNLV men's soccer team kicks off the 2000 season with two exhibition games this weekend at Peter Johann Memorial Field ... the Rebels finished the 1999 season with a 7-11-0 record overall, and 2-5 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation ... the Rebels return eight starters from last season's squad, including Jason Melendez who led the team in scoring (20), goals (8) and assists (4) ... UNLV opens the regular season Friday, Sept. 1, against Ohio State at 7:00 at Johann Field.
UNLV Head Coach Barry Barto: The winningest coach in the history of Rebel soccer, Barto begins his 19th season at the helm of the UNLV men's program and his fourth as the school's Director of Soccer ... he has a record of 177-137-34 (.557) at UNLV and a career record of 262-162-40 (.608) in 24 years of coaching ... since his arrival in 1982, Barto has built Rebel soccer into a nationally recognized program, with five NCAA tournament appearances ... he recorded his 250th career win on Oct. 6, 1998 with the team's victory over St. Mary's.
About Master's College: Master's College is a NAIA Division I institution out of Santa Clarita, Calif. with an enrollment of 980 students ... the Mustangs, who play in the Golden State Athletic Conference, finished 1999 with a record of 7-12 and 6-5 in NAIA Region II ... head coach Jim Rickard enters his 10th season at the helm of the Mustangs with a record of 115-73-12 ... the Mustangs return 10 starters this season including the top scorer from last season forward, Anthon Brueggeman, out of Glendale, Ariz., who compliled six goals, and 21 points. Also back is midfielder Rusty Brooke also of Glendale, Ariz. who scored three goals and 16 points.
About Grand Canyon: Grand Canyon is an NCAA Division II school in Phoenix, Arizona with an enrollent 3,011 ... the Antelopes finished 1999 with an impressive 17-4-0 record and 12-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association ... head coack Petar Draksin enters his eighth season at Grand Canyon with a record of 81-50-14 ... Draksin has four returning starters from last season including senior goalkeeper Mark Wilson who compliled 1640 minutes at goal, 94 saves and a 1.04 GAA. Grand Canyon will be back to Las Vegas Sunday Sep. 10 as part of the Coors Classic.
