ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The No. 6 UNLV golf team climbed from third place to second place behind the sensational play of sophomore standout Calvin Kupeyan at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on Friday.
Kupeyan, who turned in a first-round score of 71, blistered the course over his second 18 with the tournament's lowest second-round score, a four-under par 68. At five-under for the tourney, the country's 23rd-ranked player is just two strokes behind BYU's Billy Harvey (67-70--137) entering Saturday's final round.
Play during the second round of the tournament was suspended late Friday night after the first round took nearly six hours to complete. Kupeyan, however, and the UNLV squad (289-288--577) were able to complete their round and move past host New Mexico (285-295--580). The Rebels trail BYU (280-288--568) by nine strokes for the team title.
Also making a charge for UNLV was freshman James Oh (73-72--145), who stands tied for 14th overall at one-over par in his collegiate debut.
Tied with Oh is sophomore Robert Sul (74-71--145), who is playing unattached and cannot count his score toward the Rebels' total.
After an opening round of par, senior Scott Lander (72-75--147) needed an extra three strokes on the second 18 and is tied for 36th overall.
Freshman Travis Whisman (78-73--151) rebounded from a six-over par round to open the day by carding a 73. His score was needed in the round, also, as sophomore Brien Davis (73-80--153) slipped to nine-over par in the second round and is tied for 82nd overall.
Suspended play from the second round will resume Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. and will be immediately followed by the final round.
