LAS VEGAS - The UNLV golf team received one first-place vote and was ranked sixth overall among Division I men's golf programs in the preseason Golf World Collegiate Coaches Poll, announced on Wednesday.
The Rebels received 361 points in the poll of 19 of the country's coaches, ranking them behind preseason favorite Clemson, Georgia Tech at No. 2, Georgia at No. 3, Arizona State at No. 4 and defending national champion Oklahoma State at No. 5.
The MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings, administered by the Collegiate Golf Foundation, were also released on Wednesday, with the Rebels checking in at No. 7.
Clemson also stood atop the CGF rankings, followed by Georgia, Georgia Tech, Arizona State, Houston, Arizona and UNLV, respectively.
Individually, sophomore Calvin Kupeyan begins the year in the top 25, checking in at No. 23 overall in the CGF rankings. Northwestern's Luke Donald was the top-ranked individual.
The Rebels begin the 2000-01 season next week at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M., on Sept. 14-16. The tournament, hosted by the University of New Mexico, will be played on the school's Championship Course, the same site where UNLV captured its national title in 1998.
