LAS VEGAS - Sophomore midfielder Alex Hernandez did it again. Claiming his fourth game-winning goal of the season, Hernandez directed the UNLV men's soccer team to their third consecutive win as the Rebels defeated Fresno State, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field in Las Vegas.
After each team played into 90 minutes without a goal, the pressure would be on both the Rebels and Bulldogs to create an opportunity to end the game without a scoreless tie. In the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference opener on Friday night, Fresno State recorded its fifth tie of the year at New Mexico, 0-0, and did not want to go home this weekend without a score.
Hernandez, a native of Indio, Calif., responded in the early seconds of the overtime period. He would take advantage of a left side pass offered by junior forward Kelly Frederick, shooting against the back post for the golden goal win at 90:30. Hernandez, the team's leading scorer, recorded his seventh goal of the year for a total of 14 points to-date.
With its second conference victory, UNLV lifts its record to 7-4 overall, 2-0 MPSF, while Fresno State falls to 3-4-5 overall, 0-1-1 MPSF. Junior goalkeeper Justin Dennis earned his first shutout of the season with two saves. He has registered 540.30 minutes in six games played with an impressive 1.17 GAA.
The Rebels next embark on a three-game road trip with their first destination point and opponent at Denver on Friday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m.
