Men's Soccer Ties San Diego State

Oct. 26, 2001

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Double overtime became necessary as the UNLV men's soccer team tied San Diego State, 2-2, Friday night at the SDSU Sports Deck in San Diego, Calif.

Senior forward Jason Melendez had a four-point game, after opening the night with a goal at the 27:02 minute mark, off a free kick crossed from the left side by junior defender Kevin Lunkwitz. Melendez's goal would be the only one made in the first half by either team.

The second stanza was a different story. San Diego State's Enrique Tovar tied up the match 1-1, thanks to a double assist by teammates Eric Wohl and Kevin Sapanli at 48:03.

In the 63rd minute, UNLV was awarded a penalty kick and Melendez took it to the line for the Rebels. SDSU goalkeeper Tim Edwards claimed his seventh save of the night on the penalty, but Melendez would rebound the save for the unassisted put-in and 2-1 lead. Melendez, a native of Lakewood, Calif., is currently the team's leading scorer with five goals and five assists for 15 points.

Seven minutes later, SDSU's Tyler Tinling hit a shot from 20-yards out at 70:17, to knot the game and eventually send the match into overtime. In two extra periods and 115 minutes of play, before the game was suspended due to darkness, the Rebels (7-6-1 overall, 2-2-1 MPSF) and Aztecs (6-6-2 overall, 2-1-1 MPSF) came out with one final result: a draw.

The Rebels return home to host Sacramento State on Sunday, Oct. 28 at noon, while also celebrating "Senior Day" prior to the opening tip at Peter Johann Memorial Field in Las Vegas.
