ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The UNLV women's soccer team needed only 20 seconds in overtime to convert a winning play, as senior forward Janae Sims tapped in the game-winning goal for a 2-1 victory over New Mexico Friday night in Albuquerque, N.M.
Sims scored off a cross pass from freshman Annii Magliulo, deflected off a defender by sophomore Erin Egertson, to give the Rebels their ninth overall win of the season and second consecutive Mountain West Conference victory.
A scoreless first half led to all the action in the later periods. New Mexico's Danielle Pecastaing completed a corner kick from teammate Michelle Nowfel in the 51st minute to put the Lobos up 1-0.
Magliulo, a forward and the team's third leading scorer, tied the game up with her third goal of the year at the 83:37 minute mark, at the top of the box from senior midfielder Anita Pedford. She would later earn her third point of the game on the game-winning double assist.
UNLV (9-5-2 overall, 3-2-0 MWC) outshot UNM (3-10-2 overall, 2-2-1 MWC) 18-10 for the night. This is the second consecutive year for the Rebels to post a winning record in conference play with their current three wins against MWC rivals. The win also positions UNLV well, as the Mountain West Conference Tournament nears on Nov. 7-10 at Peter Johann Memorial Field in Las Vegas.
The Rebels will close out the MWC regular season on Saturday, Nov. 3 against San Diego State at 7:30 p.m., while also honoring six seniors with "Senior Day" festivities prior to the start of the game.
