Women's Soccer Advances to MWC Semifinals

Nov. 7, 2001

LAS VEGAS - Keeping its current goal streak of 24 consecutive games intact, the third-seeded UNLV women's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the 2001 Mountain West Conference Championships with a 1-0 shutout of sixth-seeded Wyoming Wednesday night in Las Vegas.

In their fourth season at UNLV and third season of competition in the league, the Rebels claimed their first victory in MWC tournament play, after having lost in the first rounds of the 1999 and 2000 tournaments. The winning result also gave the Rebels a school record tying 11 victories in a single season, to raise their current overall record to 11-6-2.

Junior midfielder Cristyn Enea scored the unassisted game-winning goal in the fifth minute, rebounding the ball off a save by Wyoming goalkeeper Lori Scheider in-front of the net. An All-MWC Second Team selection, Enea is currently tied with senior midfielder Anita Pedford as the team's leading scorer with 22 points.

Senior goalkeeper Alice Gleason earned her fifth shutout of the season with four saves, contributing to a team all-time record for most shutouts in a season with seven to-date. The Rebels outshot their opponents 13-4, with the Cowgirls (4-11-3) not being able to execute a shot in the entire second half.

UNLV will next face seventh-seeded and league tournament arch rival Air Force (8-10-1) on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. All MWC Championship games played at Peter Johann Memorial Field on the campus of UNLV.
