Women's Tennis At ASU Tournament

TEMPE, Ariz. - Friday's first round women's tennis action at the 2001 Arizona State Thunderbirds Invitational began with doubles play.

UNLV's Agnieszka Abram and Paulina Janus defeated Pepperdine's Kujawaska and Vernaz 8-2 and Marianne Bakken and Gyorgui Zsiros defeated Arizona State's Burkett and Texas Tech's Giles 8-1. Both will advance to Saturday's quarterfinals.

The team of Tracie Chong and Amy Hadziosmanovic fell to Arizona State's Colatilla and Sureephong 8-6.

In singles play, Rebel Amy Hadziosmanovic lost her play-in match to ASU's Joslynn Burkett 6-3, 6-2.

Second-seeded Paulina Janus defeated Krinke (UT) 6-1, 7-6(3) in her first round match and defeated Lauren Calohllo in the second round 6-3, 6-0.

Sixth-seeded Agnieszka Abram defeated Nicole Havlicek (Cal) 6-2, 6-3 in her first round match, but lost to Lindsay Blau (UT) 6-3, 6-1 in the second round.

Marianne Bakken dropped her first-round match to ASU's Cindy Sureephong 6-3, 6-1. She defaulted her consolation match later in the day to Ziva Grasic (UT).

Quarterfinals and semi-finals continue on Saturday with play beginning at 9 a.m.
