LAS VEGAS - The UNLV softball team will break in its new home at Eller Media Stadium in an exhibition game against the program's alumni this Saturday, Jan. 26. Gates will open at 10:30 a.m., with the dedication ceremony set for 11:30 a.m. and first pitch slated for noon.
The exhibition, free of charge, will not only be the public's first look at this season's Rebel softball squad, but also the first peek at its new $2.7 million facility.
"We have waited a long time for this new stadium and we are very thankful to our friends and supporters who have made it happen," said UNLV Softball head coach Shan McDonald. "The stadium is something our current players have worked hard for and they are excited that they will have the opportunity to play there. UNLV will now have facilities that are equal to or exceed our competition across the board, which will help us in our recruiting efforts."
Fans are encouraged to attend the free preview, which will be highlighted by a ceremony to commemorate the grand opening prior to the game. The ceremony will honor the facility's primary donors: Eller Media Group, Jim Rogers, Jerry and Sue Lykins, and the UNLV Foundation.
In addition to the game, a wide variety of promotions are planned. The first 125 fans through the gate will receive a commemorative bat. Clowns will also be on hand for pre-game entertainment.
All fans will receive free food and beverages, courtesy of PT's Pub, and will have a one-time opportunity to purchase 2-for-1 season tickets at a cost of $35. Giveaways and contests will continue throughout the day.
Following the game, the team will entertain fans on the field with an autograph session.
The game will feature the 2002 Rebel squad against former stars, such as All-Americans Lori Harrigan, Christine Parris-Washington, Amie Stewart, Tricia Reimche, Kim Rondina, Cyndi Parus, Sara Mallett, and Racheal Goodpaster.
